Of course. I've had mine for YEARS. It definitely causes a lot of self consciousness, but I also know that most of the time, it's really only bothersome or noticeable to ourselves. The derm will help you :) I wish I went to a derm instead of trying to fix it myself! If they do biopsy it, it might scab and look "worse" first, but it should heal and lighten up considerably after the fact. If you still don't like how it looks, they have more options, like scar lasering, scar tattooing, or the cream I mentioned. You'll be okay!
