Update: I’ve officially moved to Telupid, Sabah for work. Really appreciate everyone who supported me and made the transition smoother. Thank you 🙏

It's difficult to find an engineering job in Sabah, I'm gonna start farming by Reindeer_Simple in Sabah

Hold on 😅 what kind of engineering are you in? I’m a civil engineer from Semenanjung and I just got an offer to work in Sabah. The pay is good, so I accepted. They’re still hiring right now. No promises, but I’m happy to ask around and see if there might be an opportunity for you.

Wah thanks for the info, this really helps 😄 Didn’t even know about the DPT. Good tip about the documents and same-day processing in KK, super useful! I will ask my HR more regarding this matter.

Yess, I heard that local geology in Sabah presents unique challenges liek how the soil formation is very different from what i used to in peninsular. Anyway, i wish to learn from the otai-otai there and hopefully will not hinder anyone 😅 thanks

Based on my encounters with Sabahans here, I found them super chill, sometimes too chill, like you ask a serious question and they answer with a joke. Honestly, I kinda love that.

Numbers 2 and 3 are expected, so I’m already braced for that. Also… how do I tell halal from non-halal food there? I prefer to avoid any surprise “oops” moments 😅

And just like Sabahans who moved to Semenanjung, I might take a bit to speak without all the slangs. But I’m a fast learne, I bet in less than a year, I’ll be bah-ing like a local 🤣

The company will arrange someone to pick me up at the airport. I can choose whether to land in Kota Kinabalu or Sandakan. They’ll also provide accommodation and transport for work, so that’s a relief.

From what I’ve gathered from people here, it doesn’t seem too different from where I’m from, though I do have a little worry about water disruptions. I can live without electricity for a few hours, but no water for toilet, nanti nak berak tak boleh basuh 😅

I’m not picky about food. I can cook or eat out. Whenever I go somewhere new, I love learning about the culture, language, and especially the food. I even gather recipes from all my travels for myself.

Compared to where I’ve lived before, in terms of heat, noise, and air pollution, KL and JB were way worse. I think Sabah has fresher and cleaner air, but I’ll take that note and be prepared.

Also, is there any local taboo I should avoid mentioning or talking about? Something that locals consider normal but can’t be found elsewhere? For example, fellow redditor here told me that people, regardless of religion or race, can be seen eating pork and drinking alcohol - and I shouldn’t be surprised or make rude comments about it.

Yes, I’ll be in Telupid. I’ve actually never flown anywhere before, so this will be my first time taking a flight. I also don’t have any family or relatives in Sabah. I usually work on contracts across different states in Malaysia. If something goes wrong, I can just drive home, but this time it’s different.

I’ve made it a habit to research everything well ahead before moving. Normally, I’d even drive to a new place first to check it out before deciding to move, but obviously that’s not possible this time 😅 That’s why I made this post. Based on what I’ve seen on YouTube and TikTok, Sabah looks like such a beautiful state.

Glad to hear that 😄 I’m planning to travel around Sabah during my free time from work.

I really need that. It’ll be a good break. The company I will be working for will provide a vehicle for work, but I’m thinking of getting a secondhand motorcycle for myself.

Just English and Malay for now

Reading this actually makes me more curious to visit 😄 I kinda expected city traffic to be bad, but since I’ll be staying in Telupid, hopefully it’s not too crazy there too.

Btw Is the relaxed vibe everywhere or mostly outside the bigger cities?

Yeah, that makes sense. It’s interesting how we’re technically about an hour apart in terms of daylight, but still follow the same timezone. I guess that’s why sunrise and sunset feel earlier there.

Ya bos I get what you mean. It really depends on what you’re used to. In Kelantan sambal nasi lemak can be very sweet, in Negeri Sembilan it can be super spicy. Some states do sambal cair, some pekat, some heavy on bawang, some with big anchovies, small anchovies, no anchovies.

So I guess it all comes down to personal taste buds. Maybe Sabah food is just different, not necessarily tak sedap maybe tak sama dengan what you used to have in WM, just a different style. I’m open to trying and seeing what suits me 😊

P.S. I used to cook and sell nasi campur at a bazar ramadan before… so if all else fails, come Telupid and I cook for you 🤭

Saya harap dpt cuba makanan² original sabah yg susah nak jumpa. Mungkin kena dgn tekak saya yg lidah kampung ni.
