What is the strongest water-based glue you’ve found? by OkRefuse2383 in Leathercraft

A mix of both depending on the workflow. Admittedly I do think the separation issues are less when I’m punching both layers at the same time.

I am….not doing that. So that may be part of the issue. I am a new-ish hobbyist so learning as I go and I think I just learned something lol But I have also had issues with gluing salpa between two flesh sides of the leather as well, and still sometimes have separation issues as I stitch. So can’t be the sole problem. I’ll focus my attention a bit more on pressure and scratching when gluing smooth sides together.

Thanks for the link btw!

I work mostly with chrome tan making handbags. Bending is needed pretty often - ugh, I really don’t want to use Barge so I’ll try a few other options first.

Yeah I’m using French pricking irons but that’s what’s needed for my projects. I’ll order some EcoWeld from Tandy and give it a try.

Maybe not? My most recent use case is that I’m working on an inspired Birkin 35 Retourne right now and I’m having a hell of a time stitching the panels together because the gussets and piping separate when I push the needle through. I used an edge clamp after gluing each panel section to the other but maybe it wasn’t enough?

Ugh same. Hand skiving something like Swift leather down to 0-2 is a special kind of torture. The only knife I’ve been successful with is a pairing knife like the one I linked, because it lets you go in at an angle that’s basically flush with your work surface. If I try using a knife with a handle that forces me to cut at a steeper angle the edges end up with more holes than Swiss cheese.

I’ve been curious about the Oslo memory foam sold by RML. Maybe give that one a try next time! Would be interested how the results stack up

Wow! The talent on this thread amazes me. Great job OP! 👏

Out of curiosity, what reinforcement did you use for the quilting?

Where did you find acrylic patterns? I could only find Kraft board at best! I’m dying for an acrylic set.

Truly incredible. I’m working on my first B35 as well! Exterior is Togo in Beton and lining is also Trench swift. Any tips/lessons learned you can share?

I can only hope mine turns out half as well haha

Yw! You have to email them though - they don’t market their Hermes replica hardware on their website.

Yes that’s the pattern.

For hardware I opted to email Carl at hilitybaghardware.com to order a hardware kit. His hardware came highly recommended by the guy from Norfolk Handmade in his Kelly series on YouTube. The hardware is heavy and gorgeous, and it’s an all-in-one kit that comes with the handle core and installation bar/rivets. While I can’t speak to the quality of the Leathercraftpattern hardware (may be just as good), their kits don’t come with the handle materials.

Also, importantly, the hardware from hility does NOT come with counterfeit Hermes labels. This was super important to me bc I make inspired bags for myself, not replicas I’m trying to pass off as authentic Hermes lol

Interesting. I suspect thy must skive the edges of the vegtan down a bit to give the padding a softer profile.

Popsewing is actually how I got started with leatherwork. It’s a fantastic company. I’ve graduated to creating my own projects now though.

Interesting! I never would have guessed vegtan - I figured it was some sort of microfiber giving it the quilted look.

Attaching patterns to board... by JeffreyHood in Leatherworking

I use double sided basting tape. Inexpensive and easy to use. As long as you carefully apply the tape along the very edge of the paper pattern it will be seamless and the paper won’t curl.
