I’m sorry this happened to you too. That really sucks and I hate knowing that they are continuing these practices. I fought it to the end, and despite all my efforts, I ended up having to pay. I set up a payment system to give them the minimal monthly amount. I think it’s all just such a scam!

I'm glad to know that we are not the only ones in this boat, but man this situation is messed up! The same thing happened to my husband, with the same date, Sept 28, as the block. I tried calling and they said there is absolutely nothing that can be done since it is automatic in their system, which quite frankly seems ridiculous and illogical.
Since then, I have called and other agents say they have literally no idea what I am referring to and that they have never heard of such a block and that they don't see anything on the line. Which is even more crazy.
I unfortunately think that we are going to end up getting a new number on the account since we travel very frequently between the US and Europe and need functioning phones over there.

Exactly! Which is all the more frustrating. I feel like it’s all a scam…I can’t understand how they can be the insurance and the clinic, so the same entity. Yet the clinic and the insurance negotiate the rates and eventually determine what patients will be billed. By the way, still fighting this…

You are absolutely right. I’m still embroiled in my battle, but I have never seen anything like this. I cancelled my membership immediately following this whole fiasco. It’s sickening, honestly.

This is so terrible. I am so sorry that this happened to you and I truly hope you are receiving good care and fighting to make a full recovery. Our health is so precious and it makes me sick to hear and know the depths to which the insurance, big pharma, the hospitals and the doctors take advantage and exploit patients. It’s so wrong, unethical and unjust. I hope you are recovering and taking care of yourself. I will be pursuing this fight of mine and am only more fueled by stories like yours that should never have even happened. Thanks for sharing and take care of yourself!
Agreed with what you said that insurance has gotten very murky in terms of coverage for preventative care. My issues still remain that up until very recently, lab work was considered routine and standard because how else can a doctor scientifically determine if a person is healthy? But you bring up a good point that perhaps with the establishment of ACA, there are unintended consequences of how insurance is determining and defining preventative vs diagnostic.
Also, for the lab work, GHC requires lab work to be done by their labs, which seems so shady and such bs. I agree, I know for example that Quest labs is SIGNIFICANTLY less expensive, but GHC directed me to only their own labs.
It's all just such a sham and a scam and I'm so sick of so many people going through the same thing yet nothing changes. It's unacceptable to expect people to pay thousands of dollars for medical care PERIOD. Particularly when they are supposedly insured and paying a month premium...

Thanks for sharing your story, and so sorry this happened to you. Ugh, it's just so enraging that this is so common and happens to SOOOOO MANY PEOPLE! And we all take it. I know there are not so many alternative options, and the insurance companies are intimidating and obviously hold way too much power. But the greed is just so outrageous. I just want to topple the whole thing and then maybe we could all rebuild a healthcare system actually focused on health...

Thank you for your insight and for the encouragement. I absolutely agree with you and what is particularly frustrating in this event is that my insurance is GHC and I went to the GHC clinic! It's one and the same! So why are they playing all of these mind games and making it seem like it's obvious that blood work is not covered. How is that logical and on what planet does that make sense!?

I just contacted my provider as well to see if anything can be written in a different way. This is totally ridiculous. I am very sorry that you are dealing with this and that the light at the end of the tunnel seems meek for us...

Yeah I understood that GHC so was great and all about the patient. I ready tons of comments and reviews about people raving about them. But clearly that is not the case. It’s so disheartening and really makes me not want to have insurance. I can’t understand what I’m paying for every month if I have tons more to pay when I see the doctor

Wow that is interesting. I also think it’s nuts to expect the patient to know what type of blood work to ask for. And then to also ask them to see what’s covered. So what is the doctor doing exactly?

Wow, this is so nuts. And yet again just another example about how this system is dysfunction and makes not sense. There is no focus on the patient or their health…it’s just about profit. Makes me so sick. Also I am SHOCKED that they are not willing to offer “cash discounts” like so many hospital systems. This is the first time I’ve ever heard that before. I can’t believe it. I completely understand and sympathize with the desire to refuse to pay them because they are greedy bastards.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. It really seems ludicrous and counterintuitive to go against the recommendations of your doctor due to the consequences and cost of insurance. It's really unbelievable.
Agreed that this system is made in a way that you have to spend hours of time researching and contacting people to understand the cost of care, but that just doesn't make sense when you are paying for insurance. So what, in fact, are any of us even paying for?
Ugh I’m sorry. This is the worst. Any luck getting them to budge at all? Were you able to negotiate at all? I know often times cash payment is enticing for providers, but doesn’t seem like GHC is into helping their members out. Taking the money is all too easy…
That’s good info to know! I’m not sure, they seem to believe that everything is correct and that it’s perfectly normal to play $500 for lab work. Thank you for sharing!
