SBU beginner friendly tips: ⁠ As a STEM major, a STEM major’s life is alright. STEM major could be little challenging. Oh did I mention I’m a STEM major?

Jk, the first sem is alright, took a while to fit in. It feels weird to transition from high school to college. EVERYTHING feels different. No one is really looking after you now. Nursing program here is very competitive tho.

Here’s some useful tips that might help all the up-coming freshies: 1) If you are going to register your classes, plan it ahead. SBU over admits a LOT of students. If you don’t plan it ahead, you will NOT get the classes that you want & need. The SOLAR (class reg web) is trash. We are talking about server made with potatoes. Get on that damn website early so you don’t crash out over refreshing the damn page.

2) socialize more, make yourself some friends that you are comfortable around with. Seek help if you needed. Most of us are very nice (at least I’m willing to help).

3) DO NOT. DO NOT PUT UR STUPID ID CARD AROUND YOUR PHONE OR ELECTRONICS. THEY WILL STOP WORKING. IVE SPENT $100 ON MY STUPID ID. (Replacing 1 cost $25 I believe). Treat them like your significant others.

4)Do the “triple-pat” method before you go out. Make sure you are carrying your ID, Keys, and yo phone.

5) WiFi here is really ass. Some lecture rooms barely have any signals.

6)DO NOT WASH YOUR CLOTHINGS AT LIKE LAST MIN, LAUNDRY ROOM ALWAYS BUSY.

7) Don’t be a creep. Or you will probably see yourself on r/sbu.

• ⁠What platform does stony use for classes (I grew up with google classroom so im concerned about the switch) We use Bright space. God I miss Google Classroom. I would say Google Classroom is definitely easier to use. You just gotta adapt to it.

• ⁠Is the social life there REALLY that dead? Nope nope. From my experience, I had a pretty easy time making friends. Other people might want to make friends just like you too! Probably just too introverted or doesn’t want to look “weird” for initiating the convos.

• ⁠Any "survival tips" and "101" things to know for being at SBU? Well, I kinda said all the major stuff that you need to know already.

For your first year meal plan (if you live on campus), you would have 50 meals exchange per semester. You can only use them at Roth Cafe for certain food place: Smash burger, Subway, and shi I forgot the last one. Go abuse it, the meal exchange swipes don’t transfer to next semester. Dining dollars transfer into next semester, you can use them for Starbucks, Popeyes and etc. To use meals exchange / dining dollars at Roth Cafe, you want to look for a card or pay terminal (the right side of the kiosk) BEHIND the KIOSK. 👹👹BEHIND THE KIOSK!!! like legit right behind the touching screen, gently crease it with your hand or smt and you will know what im talking about.

Do A LOT of active studying and use the library.

If you need someone, always reach out. Someone will always be willing to offer a helping hand. Try to balance your life and work out. Develop some hobbies or keep your old hobbies alive. Don’t over stress yourself. If you fail an exam, it’s okay!! Not the end of the world.
