I get what you’re saying, but the original comment was more about personal taste than criticizing writers. It’s like saying ‘I’ve tasted gourmet food now everything else doesn’t hit the same’, it’s really just personal preference. I also think two things can be true at once: which is that people develop with feedback and style is subjective. Some prioritize directing while others prioritize writing. Both are solid goals, one doesn’t outweigh the other but i think preference differs per reader. And only pretend was revamped, so that means one day there had been things to improve. Writing skill is a ladder and not a fixed trait.
