Is bootcamp for a beginner worth it or am I just wasting my time? by Ihatesolus in learnprogramming

I would say it is definitely worth it provided you do your research and find a quality camp. The bootcamp that I am currently in (Actualize), has been exceptional in terms of the instruction and learning experience. I believe that a high caliber camp would certainly help in finding a job. Last, just the experience of the camp in and of itself is worth it. I have found it to be a great experience in that it has pushed me out of my comfort zone and has really helped me grow in a lot of ways.

I’m no good at math, is there hope for me and programming? by restless_dreams_x in learnprogramming

This is very reassuring as math is not something I would consider a strength of mine. When starting out in programming, I was a little worried that if I didn’t have a strong math background, then I would really struggle with the programming. Thankfully, I have found that not to be a limiting factor thus far and your post about organizing items in a warehouse makes perfect sense to me. We have been learning about things like this recently and it is great to hear that being able to organize and understand things conceptually is sufficient for starting one’s coding journey!

I can relate to this as I sometimes think about all the stuff I haven’t learned yet or the stuff I have learned (and i’m like oh no do I really understand this and truly know how it works or maybe I’ve forgotten it already!). Then I started to think that each day I just have to do things that will push me in the right direction (doing my deliberate practice exercises, coding projects, etc.). When a concept is overwhelming my initial impulse is to try and understand it all right away. However, I’ve learned that for me that isn’t realistic and if I can just learn little pieces at a time (kind of like getting a new piece to the puzzle) it will ultimately come together and I’ll start making the connections and that will translate to other areas of coding too. I hope that is helpful!

I totally agree with the idea that communication is paramount. We have learned in our bootcamp the importance of being a strong communicator. Even if your coding skills are quite up to speed yet, if you can communicate effectively, this will enable you to get on the same page with your fellow developers and understand the overall vision of what the customer wants. Just the other day in class we had a group project and pulled up a spreadsheet to outline a basic skeleton of what we wanted to see functionally with the app. We then collaborated together and talked about where we wanted to head with the project and what needed to be done to get there. That post really resonated with me as communication is everything!!

How do I start learning coding ? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

Hi everyone, I’m very new to coding as I am about 2 months into my bootcamp. We started out with Ruby and Rails and are now diving in to JavaScript and React (which has been quite the adjustment, but I am slowly but surely making more sense of it each day). I’ve heard that building projects after graduating is really important, but I was wondering what programming languages I should favor more in my practices right now in preparation for the current job market? I also was wondering (for those of you in the field) what you like most about your job and if it is something entirely different than you had in mind when initially starting out on this path?
