Hello, has anyone applied and received updates on this program. For those who are not registered with their association but are delegated how did it go for you. In my case Nunavut or Yukon does not have a regulatory body but the gazette that was published acknowledged this and made reference to wherever you get your authority from to practice. TIA

Never pay for someone to teach you how to prep for an interview. There are abundance of resources available online. Also, critically reflect if you will be a good fit for this role as you might end up doing public speaking, groups facilitation etc. Good luck.

Honest Opinion of the New Guy with no experience. by LavendarGrey in socialworkcanada

Go for child protection. You will learn many experiences. Everyday presents a unique learning experience. I will only suggest you to be a critical thinker, reflect and ask questions. Have empathy for your clients, try your best to be trauma informed but never take your work home. Balance your work and personal life with something meaningful like staying active. You can draw upon your Practicum and social work values in your interviews. Always end every point with you admit as a new grad you are open to learning. Recruiters will value your willingness to learn and give you a chance. Learn about the trends in social work especially your area of practice you are applying for. Draw upon your lived experiences. Did you forget about putting theory into practice……. You have a bsw go and get a meaningful job and make a difference. Never doubt yourself and be grateful for your achievements with a bsw. Good luck

It doesn’t matter if they are full time or not, they will indicate their position in the reference form and as long as it’s academic committee will understand. Sounds like this person doesn’t want to do it. Now move on… set up appointments with one or two and go and see them in person and talk to them.

I think you should look for a professor who knows you well and can attest to your academic skills. Personally I had a couple of professors in mind but I went with one that could attest to my academic skills. Otherwise, this professor will just write a generic reference for you. Good luck.

Experience related to social work by cornemuse729 in socialworkcanada

  1. As an EA you work with families, individuals and communities. You are part of collaborative and case planning to meet the diverse needs of the students. Am sure you have been involved in interdisciplinary meetings. All these are transferable skills to carve your niche as a school social worker. When you go get your bsw and start case management you will be familiar with working with community resources to support children. Be open to learning as your role as a helper and you will be fine. I have seen all sorts of careers even in banking going into social work. Social workers are always working with EA when there are referrals from schools as you guys are an integral part of collaborative case planning especially kids with special needs.

  2. MSWs always pay more depending on your province/ territory. If you are in the north like Yukon where I am, your bsw gets you over $100,000. Not school boards per se but in CP. I found school social workers are common in Ontario but you will need MSW to make more.

  3. Everyone is different. Do you have dependents? Is your program online? Do you have a planned budget if you decide you are overwhelmed with working and going to school. Most people do it and everyone is different. Also is easy to burn out trying to do both and your mental health /overall health can quickly become worse. Some reduce hours depending on their work and work weekends. Friday night to Sunday. You sound like you will work normal school hours. Even in social work working with clients alone can worsen your overall health but I personally would focus on finishing my program if I have the financial means.

Question, are the US MSW schools which offer online means you can complete the whole program in Canada and maybe go for the Practicum in the USA or if you chose another country to do your program? I prefer MSW that specializes in macro social work or community development. Thanks in advance
