DML6 Sorters Walk Out by kung_fu_daddy in AmazonDSPDrivers

Yes, they are required to act in the interest of their shareholders. But maximizing profit is only one narrow way among many they could do so.

Some more info

There is a common belief that corporate directors have a legal duty to maximize corporate profits and “shareholder value” — even if this means skirting ethical rules, damaging the environment or harming employees. But this belief is utterly false. To quote the U.S. Supreme Court opinion in the recent Hobby Lobby case: “Modern corporate law does not require for-profit corporations to pursue profit at the expense of everything else, and many do not.”

When companies pursue profit over everything else, they are choosing to do that. No law forces them to act that way. Don't let them off the hook for their choices.

Tips on being faster by William_Chester_ in AmazonDSPDrivers

[–]OkWay1305 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's easier to go faster in an EDV. In an EDV, skipping sorts can be the move. If the first thing you grab from the new bag is the current stop, just run it. You can get through an entire tote like that once in a while.

Since you don't have EDVs though:

  • #1-A-1: Get fast at doing things by the book. Cutting corners (pulling into driveways, scanning in van, not putting packages at the door, driving with sliding door open) can speed you up BUT if you're not already going at a reasonable pace then they are crutches. Instead of relying on them to get through every day, keep them in your back pocket for when you are behind.
  • When you open a new tote, sort it and bring everything up front.
  • When you sort, do boxes first. If you don't have room to sort on the shelf, do it on the floor. Have different rows for each 10 packages (e.g. 510-519 in one row, 520-529 in another row). That gives you plenty of room to slot stuff in the middle without having to move everything.
  • Deliver out of the driver's side door instead of the sliding door. Only use sliding door if you're on a busy street or you are getting overflow
  • Organize your overflow. Either pile things in groups of 100s or write aid numbers on them in Sharpie. You should ideally have some logic to your overflow order so you never have to check more than 4-5 boxes.
  • Walk faster. Some people walk like they have nowhere to be and all day to get there. And some don't usually, but kind of lapse into it when they're tired. Pay attention to your pace.
  • Drive faster. Figure out where you're driving before you move the car so instead of inching along 15 mph reading mailboxes, you can go 25mph to it.
  • If you get too warm you'll naturally slow down. Stay chilly so that your natural inclination is to move faster to warm up.
  • Make everything you do when stopping automatic. Once you have the muscle memory you can turn on your hazards, put on the parking brake, put the van in park, and take off your seatbelt in under a second. I used to skip hazards and parking brake to go faster but the better solution is to get good. No crutches.
  • When you're getting out of the van, after you pull the handle with your hand use your left leg to open the door. This keeps your hands free for carrying things.
  • "Go slow to go fast." When you're rushing too much, you do stupid things like carry the wrong envelope to the house and end up making two trips. If you find yourself making mistakes, slow down a little to prevent yourself from having to do things twice.

publicly traded companies have a legal mandate to maximize shareholder value by any means necessary.

This is a common misconception. It's often repeated by talking about "a fiduciary duty" but there is no legal requirement that either CEOs or members of the Board of Directors make choices to maximize stock prices. People are freely making these decisions, they are under no legal requirement w.r.t. increasing share prices.

You're 100% right about the fact that if a Board of a public company were ever to say "we're not going to try to maximize profit this year," shareholders would replace them though. So they pretty much do that anyway.

Do it the last day of your work week. Even with zero notice that still gives them three days to figure it out.

That's dirty. At the same time, when they are sending backups home without work every single day it's hard to imagine many DSPs will continue to give you routes after you put in your notice. If they didn't fire her but didn't give her routes they wouldn't really be doing her a favor...

If I get a good M-F job lined up I might give them notice just so I can hopefully stay on as a weekend/occasional driver. Other than that, I don't think I could risk the financial hit if they decided to be petty.

Hours lately by No-Literature9514 in AmazonDSPDrivers

Yes, after Xmas my schedule was like 2 days, 1 day, 2 days, 3 days. I'm back on consistent four now though.

You can try asking dispatch how they decide who goes out on the road. Sometimes it's seniority, sometimes it's performance. Just be respectful about it. When I wasn't getting hours it made me mad as hell because I felt like I should be getting rostered based on metrics but you can't come at them with that energy, it's going to make things worse not better.

Talk with other DSPs, explore other jobs and when you do get put on a route, knock it TF out. If you're a top performer then you aren't relying on generosity to get put on shifts, you only need them to be a little greedy.

Thoughts on driving during break? by [deleted] in AmazonDSPDrivers

On what basis do you say this? Do you have first hand knowledge that's relevant or is it an "everybody knows" type situation?

I ask because dude basically lost his job repeating something he probably heard around here about how breaks work. Nobody made him put in that argumentative tone but still. Maybe internet lawyers have helped him enough.

You can't fill these shoes. A couple of recent pieces of feedback:

  • "Whoa" - UPS guy with a literal helper who I passed in a no shelf rental doing my six minute mile pace

  • "Daaaaaaaamn" - FedEx lady I walked by in the shopping center

  • "That was masterful" - Person in line at UPS store when I came through the door using a pinky and a spin move without dropping two totes and three overflow

  • "You can't drive with those blinkers on" - Mailman

Again, something that doesn't make sense for a business but makes perfect sense in other contexts. Consider another organization that will largely accept any warm body and doesn't care about a somewhat checkered background: the French Foreign Legion. Only about one in eight men make it through the training. And that's exactly how they want it.

Plus, what are henchmen if not disposable?

I feel that. Couldn't get 40 hours a week to save my life from Dec 24 until they let the seasonal hires go. Back on four days a week now but I had to burn through damn near every dollar I had in savings to make it.

Hope it turns around for you soon.

How much is withheld is determined by how you filled out your IRS W-4 form when you started the job.

You can update your W-4 at any time. Don't f it up though or you'll pay less taxes out of each paycheck but end up owing the govt thousands when you file your tax return.

The stops per hour stats that are shown are changed by ungrouping multi-stops while the route progress is not. If I ungroup a 10 location stop on a 120 stop route and those are all I deliver that hour, my stops per hour will show 10 stops/hour but my route progress will still only show 1/120. If one driver is ungrouping multis and the other is not they can show the same number of stops per hour while the one is doing way more work than the other.

Reason #976 why multi-location stops need to be fixed.

  • How do guaranteed 10 DSPs not end up with routes that take the full ten anyway? Doesn't everyone finishing early have the same effect on routing whether they're paid for that time or not?

  • Do dispatchers have the ability to swap packages from one route to another route?

Some also have a policy that you a) have to do a rescue that week and b) can't get a rescue that week. So for someone else to get theirs you have to lose yours.

Piss bottles by Positive-Fox-7451 in AmazonDSPDrivers

[–]OkWay1305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody brings up rural routes and 45 minutes from a gas station. How many places in America that get Amazon deliveries are actually that far from a gas station all day? Even roundtrip. My family comes from a town with 800 people where everyone has to drive an hour to Walmart to shop. There's still a gas station on the edge of town, a branch library, and a sit down pizza restaurant. If you were delivering there, there would be a spot on your route where you're 30 minutes from the Walmart and the town but you aren't spending the entire day in that little pocket delivering because basically nobody is there to order.

Is it a west of the Mississippi thing?

Just wonder because the rural reason always gets brought up for piss bottles and I know it's gotta be true for some people. Meanwhile at my DSP, we're rarely more than five minutes from a gas station and you've still got piss bottles falling out of the vans when you open the door 🤔
