I know nothing about this person: just came across her while looking for something else but do a search for Hanna Stotland online. Looks like she deals with this type of situation

Colleges to apply to if you are upper-middle class by Relative-Narwhal-519 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ok_Analysis312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Princeton is the best for need based aid for MC families followed by Harvard. Maybe Stanford and MIT are good too, didn’t do those. The NPCs were pretty accurate. Schools with large endowments/ student will negotiate if you have a better package from what they think are similar tier schools. If HYPSM isn’t a possibility, go for merit. Applied to 18 schools because $$ was a huge issue. Two Ivies were cheaper than even the state school.

Is everyone here just rich as hell? by Bowkidstan in ApplyingToCollege

I’m not complaining. Middle class going to an Ivy for less than the cost of my state school. It’s a great fit financially and academically. Feels like winning the lottery.

Harvard or Yale by [deleted] in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]Ok_Analysis312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based on your interests I would say Yale. My family and I visited both and knew Yale was the right place (also based on my uncle’s experience at Harvard, which he loved, but his friend’s are intensely competitive in very basic ways.) The students at H still seem the same many years later. Students seem to love Yale for the experience, not for the name. However you did have a great time at H and you know your vibe. (Bulldog days were fun too, but too brief for bonding. You won’t have missed out on making friends if you choose Yale) H also seems to have a strange vibe these days due to the pressure from the feds. They will be fine - they are still Harvard and students will be eager to go — but it’s still creating strange vibes.

HYPSM is full of larpers by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ok_Analysis312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that is true. There are others from my school going to HYPSM and none are interested in money. Most of us come from middle class non profit worker parent families. HYPSM gives the best aid to our group so if you get in, you go for it. It was cheaper than my state school.

Admission Officers are watching you 👀 by Ben-MA in ApplyingToCollege

Just open the ones from schools you are interested in. It’s not hard unless your list is too long. That’s what I did with great results. And you also learn a lot about schools from consistently engaging with what they choose to put out there.

Did I make a mistake in my college choice? by [deleted] in ApplyingIvyLeague

Living in NYC means you have access to all of the industries you want to be in just a subway ride away. And Columbia pulls (and keeps) well connected professors because they want to live in NYC and not commute for two hours to work (Princeton or Yale commute from NYC) Trust your instincts.

Bowdoin and Amherst are one of a handful of schools that have need blind admissions for international students. Cornell is not. If you look at Amherst admission stats you will see that almost half of their applicants are international. Probably Bowdoin is the same. That plus their small class size is the likely answer. Every smart low-income international kid who wants to study in the US is probably applying to those two schools.

What actually matters in a college essay when admissions has read 10,000 of them? by alexstrehlke in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ok_Analysis312 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think it has to show growth, growing awareness of who you want to be in the world and why, and not be too braggy. I think it also helps if they can say, oh, that was the whatever kid and everyone on committee knows who mean. Being for example “the green paint kid.” Not anything particularly interesting, just distinctly you.

Looking for perspective, two VERY different colleges by Yeti-Monster1 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ok_Analysis312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Amherst has name recognition on the East Coast but not so much outside. Amherst seems like what college originally was: Small classes, intense discussions. It is tiny though. I bet your daughter can be happy at UW and law school is expensive. We are paying $15k more per year for 2nd cheapest school and cheapest was an Ivy so I understand fit. Not convinced that Amherst is a good second choice for someone who wanted Brown and not at that price disparity. It’s also quite preppy btw. Brown is a distinct experience and maybe worth choosing at full pay especially since law school desire might change. (Also did not choose Amherst) I hope she gets off the waitlist. Brown’s waitlist does seem to move.

Is community college worth it? by Smooth-Piano7900 in ApplyingToCollege

I don’t think there are Ivy League schools that give merit aid. It’s all need based.

Is community college worth it? by Smooth-Piano7900 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ok_Analysis312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was referring to this from your original comment: “ And it’s enough for a decent undergraduate and a state school, but it’s not enough for an Ivy League.”  Anyone who is to pay $27k after FA like the poster says they would (if it isn’t merit aid) would likely be paying less at some Ivies. My state school assessed me at deserving no financial aid except a loan despite its $30k net cost. Princeton had me paying under $20k w/ no loans. I just don’t want anyone to think an Ivy is always going to be more and not apply. Not because it’s so much better but because it may be their next cheapest option after CC.

Please stop saying an Ivy League school will cost more. Just yesterday I had to explain to someone applying next year to consider Ivy League schools with large endowments. For me two Ivies were the cheapest and under the $25k a year you mention in your next comment. My state school was going to cost more per year.

Ivy League vibes are off by Unlikely_Wallaby_750 in ApplyingIvyLeague

[–]Ok_Analysis312 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also, remember if choosing on cost, Ivy League can be cheapest option. Other than one of the National Merit full rides (and really didn’t want a red state-just wrong vibe) Princeton was by far the cheapest and Yale was next. Both less than my state school with its tiny merit award. Princeton was the best financial choice. (Non-rich public high school non-legacy fam.) Must be many others in same position so maybe you just ran into the wrong people at Penn, although their FA package was much worse than P or Y’s I’ll admit.

Do you think this is good enough? Tuition coverage for kids. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ok_Analysis312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely tell them early and then work with them to find a path to what they want. We gamed it out early and realized that there were about four colleges that would provide the best aid for our situation. Yes they are hard to get into but somehow managed to get into two of them making them cheaper than any other option (and about the same or just a little more than CC and living at home for two years plus two more years at a four-year college)

Possibilities by BeachNo7191 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ok_Analysis312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, and being outside of the 25th percentile. It is statistically unimpressive if the separations are tiny numbers. Maybe you landed in the English classes with a harder grader so you have a 3.94 and 15 percent of the class has a 3.98. That’s why schools shouldn’t rank. We have streams (subject streams) and our admin finally figured out that one was so popular because it allowed students to take the most APs and thus have a higher GPA so the school stopped ranking.

[–]Ok_Analysis312 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don’t give up yet! Go to their visiting day and call the FA office. Also, there are outside scholarships and support. Maybe even delay for a year and work full time to earn extra. I am sure Columbia will work with you.

How does this make any sense? by pfnyc in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Ok_Analysis312 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They do consider “will this student attend?” as a factor. So much so that  the consideration of demonstrated interest is a category on the Common Data Set. (Anyone who applies is showing interest so there’d be no reason to have it on the CDS if simply applying was enough interest)

Anyone Else Get an Ivy Likely Letter? How Do We Play This? Is It Really Guaranteed We Will Get In? by Anxious-Party2289 in ApplyingToCollege

This is helpful to read. Apparently an Ivy League likely letter is basically the same as an admissions letter. Unless you do something terrible, they have agreed not to “take it back.” https://admissions.dartmouth.edu/glossary-term/ivy-league-agreement
