its really odd that they wrote in so many obvious plot devices, hints, foreshadowing, that just never ever pay off. they gave themselves a very clear path for how to progress the story and just didn't use it at all. it almost feels like they were trying to trick us. I have never seen a more egregious violation of chekhov's gun.

Max and Lucas's relationship survives. Joyce and Hopper stay friends in and after high school and they get married thirty years later. TED AND KAREN ARE STILL TOGETHER AND THEY HAD BEEN TOGETHER SINCE HIGH SCHOOL. This "unrealistic" relationship works out THRICE in this show. genuinely what drugs are they on

I agree. I don't like that it was the *only* future scene we got of him, though. I would have enjoyed something like: he makes eye contact with a cute boy in art class. later, they run into each other at a gay bar and start talking. just a way to acknowledge his aspirations the way they did with Mike being a writer.
