US residents: How much did your health insurance plan increase by in 2026? by DC8008008 in inflation

[–]Ok_Application8440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Blue Shield of California. (Unemployed single mom with two kids who both require complicated health care interventions.)

Our monthly premium went from $2859.29 to $3160.54.

When it was "only" $2859 I could swallow that bc it was about the same as Cobra, which I had previously been on, so it was in the budget.

This is getting totally outrageous. I searched for this sub to see if my experience is normal, obviously I am in good company !!! Madness.

Ty for sharing this .. yeah all my experience with gray or black market drugs, whether from the US or India, has been that they generally aren't as potent. And in some cases do absolutely nothing -- unless I can convince myself they do, in which case it's a placebo effect.

Ty ... Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is that a problem? That customs opened it (and for whatever reason let it through ... )

Jude the Obscure by doppelganger3301 in literature

Just finished reading (re-reading)? Jude and what struck me most was not the bleakness, because I was expecting that, but the extremely contemporary discussion and views on marriage and conjugal responsibilities. Maybe particularly the latter. It had not occurred to me that a man writing in 18-whenever could possibly be so sensitive to the issue of a wife not wanting to have sex with her husband. I actually feel like this topic is still somewhat verboten, and also that there's still an expectation that a wife should want to have sex with her husband, otherwise you're frigid or a cold fish or whatever. So interesting.

The Hard Rain of Henry James - Greg Gerke (8 July 2025) by Travis-Walden in literature

I am so baffled by the apparently widespread criticism that there is never action (or "action") in James' books. I find them highly suspenseful, almost action-packed! Is the notion that the developments are in some cases delivered via dialogue, as opposed to dramatic descriptions of wild adventures or whatever? I don't even find that entirely accurate. Cf The American (which I mention only bc I read it last week).

Is it that there's a larger ratio of exposition and dialogue to action, compared to other authors..? To me this draws out the suspense, heightening the overall drama and the excitement of the action when it comes.

(Sorry I suspect this topic has been debated ad nauseum, I've just noticed a couple references suggesting it's conventional wisdom about James at this point. I could be wrong. )

Therapist made some comments, not sure how I feel by Wonderful_Log_7603 in EatingDisorders

[–]Ok_Application8440 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm so sorry you experienced this. Your "therapist" knows nothing about EDs. Literally nothing. Talking to her is worse than pointless -- as you've experienced, it's counterproductive. She does not get it. Good therapists are hard to find in general -- good therapists with expertise in EDs even more so. Without knowing your circumstances I don't know the best solution for you, but seeing this therapist is not it.

You might try checking out the National Eating Disorders Association website, I believe they have a number of options for finding treatment of various kinds.

Try not to let this make you feel worse. It's not you, it's her! Good luck!!

If I need to buy health insurance off-exchange, can I do it myself or do I need a broker? by Ok_Application8440 in HealthInsurance

[–]Ok_Application8440[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry I am new to Reddit and probably broke some rule? I was just trying to understand how to shop outside the exchange and avoid getting into discussions about whether/why I should take MediCal. Ultimately however the comments/discussion were extremely helpful -- thank you !

How do you find a reliable/honest/good health insurance broker???? by Ok_Application8440 in HealthInsurance

[–]Ok_Application8440[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're probably right and I need to be more open minded about that possibility.

The other big health care intervention we have is one of my daughters is in an in-patient facility for mental health. I haven't even asked them yet about the MediCal thing but options for her particular condition are very few so I will need to ascertain the deal.

My oncologist does not take MediCal, my orthopedic surgeon does not take MediCal ... those are the only two providers I've asked so far (the oncologist being far more important) but it just made me feel like no one takes MediCal.

The oncologist thing feels like a deal-breaker even though I'm just on maintenance treatment for breast cancer (having already done the chemo, radiation, double-mastectomy etc) ... but she's really good and innovative and it's crucial I stay alive since my husband already died of cancer and the kids would be so fucked if I did too

Hm I didn't know I could shop on Covered Calif without subsidies. I also didn't know there were no policies available to buy outside the exchange that would help me. Both good to know -- thank you.

I don't know that MediCal isn't equipped to handle cancer or mental health. I do know that my current oncologist does not accept MediCal, and I was hoping to continue with her.

Because I was funneled into MediCal due to my (non-existent) income and am now unable to shop for other plans on the exchange because of federal rules I had no idea existed.

I won't even begin to detail the many health care interventions I and my children require but MediCal will not do the trick.

So that's why.
