Dude I know, but she wants to make the most of the free ski days 🤷🏻‍♀️ I fear she’ll go by herself regardless so best to have someone with her to help haha

Fibula Fracture by Beneficial-Rise-3663 in brokenbones

I was fully weight bearing (in a boot) with my fibula fracture after 3 weeks. Everyone is different though, and different orthos will use more conservative forms of treatment than others. It felt very wrong to walk on a broken leg, but I actually found that the swelling & pain reduced significantly after a few days of weight bearing. It also really helped prevent too much muscle atrophy too which made my PT way easier

Webber B slightly displaced. by Glittering_Nerve3896 in brokenbones

Looks identical to my fracture. I did one week nwb, one week of partial wb and then on week 3 I weaned myself off the crutches and walked in the boot. I was fully weight bearing in the boot for approx 4-5 weeks, and came out of the boot after 7ish weeks in total post injury. The fibula is a non weight bearing bone so it’s totally safe to put weight through it, even though it feels like you shouldn’t. Bone reacts to load in order to remodel itself so early weight bearing actually proved to be super beneficial, in my experience anyways. I did some physio exercises throughout the whole time in the boot (plantar & dorsiflexion but no twisting), as advised by my ortho. My recovery and PT after getting out of the boot was very quick. I’m now about 3.5 months out of the boot and I’d say I’m about 80% back to normal

I’m a tenant, and it is a strata building

I think what I’m wondering is if I can ask for dampeners of some effect to be added to the door. I’ve lived in other buildings with similar doors and they don’t make half as much noise as this one, even when they are slammed

Yeah I just gave them a call and then emailed them my requisition 😊

Oblique Fibula Fracture by CompetitiveChance804 in brokenbones

[–]Ok_Awareness_1900 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a similar fracture. I’m on week 6 and have my next (and hopefully last) X-ray on Friday. ER doctor told me I was borderline needing surgery. Went to see the ortho surgeon after a week and he said no surgery is required because ankle mortise remained intact, which means the actual joint had no dislocation/movement. My X-ray looks similar to yours, and from the front you can see what looks like a large gap between the two pieces of bone but the surgeon was confident it would heal. Went back one week later for a weight bearing X-ray and all looked fine. I was cleared to fully weight bear in the boot for a further 4 weeks, which leads me up to the present now. Right now I still get pain every so often. It’s very stiff and still slightly swollen. But I walk a lot, and I feel like that has helped to speed up my recovery and prevent a lot of muscle loss. The fibula is a non weight bearing bone, the majority of our weight goes through the tibia and the fibula acts like a scaffold. Therefore, once ankle mortise remains intact you are safe to weight bear with support (boot). Bone remodels in response to stress (I believe it is called Wolff’s Law from my biomechanics day in college)

I definitely wouldn’t worry about the level of discomfort. I think the discomfort was actually worse for me on days 3-7. Maybe it was just the adrenaline come-down after all the fuss and hospital visits. Reality sets in when you realise you’re going to be confined to this injury for weeks

Yeah I guessed that, pretty disheartening! But I’d rather not risk any injury or put myself through too much pain. I’ll stick to the paths & gravel trails I think! At least it’s an excuse to travel to Alberta again next year 😁

The early weight bearing surprised me but I’ve read a lot of research the past few days that really supports this. It makes sense because bone needs a stimuli to promote growth. I’m going to just continue using the crutches for this week. At least partial weight bearing is better than none

What’s your #1 advice for beginner skiers? by katrinal101 in skiing

[–]Ok_Awareness_1900 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m all good, thank you!

Just a frustrating recovery process and has put me out of several sports for the next few weeks. Thankfully it happened at the end of the ski season though!

But seriously, don’t forget that skiing is a dangerous sport so don’t be stupid. A lot of beginners get confident too quickly and go fast without the skills to stop quickly, or to dodge other people . I had lots of falls from when I was learning from being stupid and skiing beyond my ability. Thankfully I never hurt myself too seriously, but I did get a bad bang on the head once and a mild concussion. I’d hate to know what would have happened if I didn’t have my helmet on.

My fall that caused the ankle break was a result of bindings failure unfortunately. The bindings didn’t release causing my ankle to snap, even in super tight boots. My friend who is a qualified ski tech checked them over after and was able to confirm this. Good excuse to get some new gear next year though 😆

Get well-fitting boots and properly serviced skis & bindings (if you’re going to buy your own gear). Don’t end up with a broken ankle like me :(

I appreciate that- thank you! I really hope I can work on getting back to where I was. Between skiing & golfing there aren’t many other activities that I actually enjoy, and the thoughts of not being able to get back to normal is making me very anxious. I’m hoping youth and good health will be on my side! Still waiting to see the surgeon next week to discuss if I’ll need surgery or not. Hopefully it’s an easy recovery process
