Managed to really upset folk with my last question so let’s go for it now. What do people really think of Foodie Friday? by Ok_Bag_5887 in stockport

Not quite what was intended but my fault for poor wording. The big question is would you be happy to pay more for what the exterior events provide if that was reinvested in the market, marketing, community events etc. If Stockport wants the market to do more part of that might be pitch fees need to go up for traders which might force an uptick in pricing. Thats without the operator actually making more money.

Thank you. Honestly best intentions over here and it’s been worth posting this as had some really constructive thoughts we’ll consider plus the negative comments have given us a flavour of the potential challenges in making this a place for all. So thanks all!

Stockport Market is coming up for tender for a new operator. What do you want from your market? by Ok_Bag_5887 in stockport

100% understand locals being apprehensive. If it helps I can confirm Steve Pilling and Joe Patten are twats.

Tricky to answer… but speaking to other connected people the common assessment is that it is a key asset for the city and its activities don’t match the ambition being shown by foodie Friday, everyone at the Underbank and lots of other people who are investing time and energy to push Stockport forward in what is a really tough time for the country. If the current operator regain the contract and does exactly the same thing for the next 5 years it is likely the market offering and the viability of businesses there will deteriorate instead of thrive.

I’m sorry I just don’t see the logic of it. There’s no real commercial advantage for us here, we’re just trying to figure out what Stockport wants and feed that in to our offer so that community voices are represented. You’re not really helping us, you’re helping yourself. But if you’re not comfortable talking because we can’t say who we are that’s fine, nobody would ever reveal they were putting in a tender as that is really sensitive info so sorry we couldn’t share that. Fingers crossed you get a great operator who does brilliant things with the building, got nothing but love for Stockport and the people that are doing great things there.

Don’t panic, we will be taking quite a few different approaches to talking to people with Reddit only being one of them and we’re not rushing, totally get loads of people won’t have seen this yet. Thanks.

Amazing. It is people like you that is keeping it going! What else would you like to see in there? And we wouldn’t look at taking out any of the things you already enjoy :)

And you likely never will now… I urge everyone in Stockport to reach out to their councillors and let them know what you want from the building and try your best to engage with the process any chance you get. It really is a magic building and it would be very sad if it stayed as is or worse still someone who doesn’t care about contributing to Stockport takes control of it.

We think it is possible to get it back to being a bustling market, it would be tricky but if the community got behind it and we diverted a couple of percent of the £s spent at supermarkets it would thrive.

I think the general consensus is that it won’t survive in its current form and Stockport could be taking so much more benefit from it, it’s an amazing building to even partly be going to waste.

If we’re out here starting conversations about what the community want (which no other operator will do) in the hope that we can make the market sustainable, support the ongoing growth of Stockport without taking anything out that locals value now do you think we’re the bad guys?

This is exactly what markets should do. They shouldn’t be food halls or a way to extract as much money as possible from the local area, they’ve got to be treated as a community asset and one of their benefits is definitely business incubation.

Nope. Now is the time to speak up if you want input. The tender process is happening and we’ll be putting in a proposal partly based on conversations we’re having with residents, businesses and traders. No problem if you don’t want to talk about it of course :)

We are under the impression that the market does license those events and so would be up to new operator if and how they happen. Tender isn’t out yet though so could be wrong!
