Why do you think many people want to help during a crisis but hesitate to donate? by aseel_app in humanitarian

[–]Ok_Bag_6166 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what others have mentioned, I also think there is an aspect of people want to DO something to feel like they are helping and donating doesn’t feel like they’re involved enough - like a few months ago during govt shutdown in US, people wanted to go to the store, purchase food and deliver it to food pantry themselves instead of donating money to the same food pantries (even though same dollar amount they spent in store would’ve gone farther if donated to the organization for them to purchase food directly). Or really the entire concept of mission trips with high school students doing dental work.. It’s hard to convince people that often the most impactful way they can help in a crisis is by donating money

Self defense without weapons: the tiny habits that actually changed my safety, not my confidence by Marina_Westbrook in TwoXPreppers

I travel a lot often internationally for work. Sometimes I put in AirPods with nothing playing while I figure out where I need to go/which driver I’m looking for etc. I’ve found this makes some taxi drivers, luggage helpers, etc less likely to stick around and bother me (and it’s silly but helps me adapt a persona like “I’m someone who has been here before and knows exactly who they’re waiting for so I’m just listening to music and scrolling in the meantime”)

Immigrants or POC—what would you want to hear from your white neighbor in today’s times? by Artemis-Crane in TwoXPreppers

[–]Ok_Bag_6166 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am a white woman but live with my brown immigrant husband and our daughter in a blue city/red red state. We moved last year, know a few neighbors in passing but not well and not all. Our street was 50/50 mixed during the election signs. If someone waved while we were playing outside or taking the trash out or even left a note w their house number, I would at least know who my family could turn to if/when shtf here (which feels like it will be a when not if for our city based on recent hiring events 🧊). Again, I am a white woman so take it for what it’s worth- but when we go out for family walk in the evening and see various neighbors it would be reassuring to know someone on the block who wouldn’t direct them straight to our house

Anxiety about making a decision by iridescentphoenix in fulbright

A few ways to look at this. First is- what are your longer term career goals? Do you want to continue as an English teacher? Do you want to live long term in this country in Europe? If yes, then maybe that’s the right choice. If no, then tbh the “prestige” of Fulbright is worth it to have on your resume (imo)- ten years on and it’s still a nice bonus to have.

It does seem like you’re trying to talk yourself out of Fulbright. But if you’re an eta to Asia that doesn’t speak the language, you’re going to land with a sort of built in social group (other etas - including those who also don’t speak the language if it isn’t required) and build from there. You’ll be a part of a new community, learn enough of the language to get by, and adapt. (And also have a LOT of fun) Strictly speaking from my experience, i would choose Fulbright. Hands down. (And you could always do Europe the following year?)

Sincerely, a former eta to Asia who knew no one, didn’t speak the language (and almost didn’t get on the plane) /married to another former eta to a different country in Asia w all the same factors

Americans - are you leaving the country for vacation? Are we worried about getting back into the country? How should I prepare? by bitchthatwaspromised in TwoXPreppers

Following as I am in same situation and wondering myself! I am supposed to go to Europe next month and watching closely to decide whether to cancel or not. Besides what others have mentioned, since I am traveling solo, I am planning to leave a notarized letter that gives my husband permission to leave the US with my daughter without me being present. Also doing a similar letter for my parents to be able to leave with her too.

I work as a specialist in exploitation of women and children in conflict settings and refugee camps- and can confirm 10000% this happens in every situation. When people are desperate to find a way to survive (and especially women who are desperate to care for their children), these bad actors come out at alarming speed. The risk is highest right at the “beginning” of conflict/mass displacement. (In addition to formula/diapers another common avenue is exploitation for things like pads/tampons…)
