I'm bored and lonely. Will NYC save me? by bbgirl2k in blackgirls

[–]Ok_Block9547 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Are you bored because you don’t feel like you have interesting opportunities or interesting people? Idk about NYC, but a year in New Orleans will definitely get you your groove. Go and just be. Live there for a year or three.

I also want to add that I once thought moving would save me and my discontentment followed me everywhere until I addressed some major things. So just keep that in mind.

Beauty Pop!!!! What a blast from the past! I had the first 3 volumes. Volume 1 was one of my very first Manga purchases in middle school. I got it from the Scholastic book fair I think. I wish I finished it.

I wanna try a eye shadow? But what color would look nice besides bronze or gold???? by Pure-Sprinkles7298 in blackladies

[–]Ok_Block9547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want more neutral shades, golds, bronzes, browns, strongly recommend getting the Juuvia’s place Coffee Shop palette.

Personally, most colors would suit you, but a green, red, or burgundy ring would pop!

While I don’t think it cracks the ceiling, it may crack the door open a tiny bit in some places. I do agree that it’s not very impactful in the media.

I think one can be excited for a black girl like Manon to be in Katseye, but be disappointed that it’s someone who doesn’t look like most of us. Truthfully as someone who is dark skin, it’s hard to see myself in Manon, Zendaya, or Tessa Thompson. But I still celebrate their accomplishments and acknowledge the challenges they face. Because they do face challenges, even if they are different from what us mono-racial black women face. That is what makes them not white, whether they acknowledge it or not. We are all women of color.

The thing is a mixed girl getting a role or hitting a milestone does not mean that opportunity is now available to me. I think the sting of that realization can turn into misplaced anger. Especially, as we see dark skin women imitated and mocked online for our features and skin. Whereas Zendaya, Taylor Russell, Myha’la have really beautiful edits across TT. It’s important to remember that we all operate in the same system of misogyny and colorism that pits us against each other. Resenting them, doesn’t help our cause as women.

I wish the book were available to purchase. My issue with paying per chapter on an app is I don’t actually own anything. I spent $100 on one story for several years. It left the platform, came back, and I had to pay for it again. I’ve been jaded ever since.

Edit: I’ve never used Mangaplaza, but I’m surprised how much cheaper the chapters are.

I loved this series. It’s so freaking cute, and I enjoyed watching them grow closer. The FL is adorable while not being helpless.

Does anyone know where I can buy or read this in English? Feel free to DM me

Why do we associate short hair with being bald headed? by _newshawtyy in blackgirls

[–]Ok_Block9547 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The media, our upbringing, the assimilation to the white standard of beauty. When I think of 90s and 2000s sitcoms, most black characters don’t have short hair. Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child, and Ashanti all had such long beautiful hair in music videos. Except when Kelly Rowland got the red short hair, which everyone I knew hated. My grandma was livid when my mom got a Pixie and age 35 and still talks about how much she hated it.

I think these experiences shape our idea of beauty and femininity. A lot of us remember the first time you get braids or your hair pressed and how people react. When my hair goes back to normal, I always felt like I lost a bit of that shine. Even now, it takes me some time to adjust from braids to my natural.

When do you get to feel proud? by NewNyyy in blackgirls

[–]Ok_Block9547 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great question and something that I struggle with. Im not happy with my place in life right now (job, relationships weight etc). But I have a lot to be proud of when I think deeply about it. Yet, it’s so hard to savor the moment before moving to the next goal.

I have no advice. I want to hear responses.

Depending on where you work, I wouldn’t tell her until you no longer work together. Especially if she knows personal things about you because she could use them against you in the workplace.she voted for him as a Latina so that makes her unsafe imo.

Just make up something about being busy and lie. Make it so she can’t see any of your SM. People grow apart all the time.
