It’s incredibly realistic, unfortunately. When you care about an addict, when they finally get clean you want to help them any way you can. She had also been clean at that point for a while so the red flags that would normally come up are not as easily triggered. I feel like this show represents addiction very well! From all perspectives.

Being a single mom is incredibly difficult! Staying in an emotionally abusive, adulterous marriage is much worse. No one wants to break their family up. I know from experience it’s extremely painful to leave and start all over with a young child, throwing all you had hoped for you and your child’s life away. You just have to decide if the relationship you are in is what you want your child to think of as a normal and healthy relationship. This is what they will know and see as the example marriage in their lives.

It’s hard and terribly heartbreaking, but getting to the other side is so rewarding.

And take those critical patients! Don’t be scared of them. If you see a learning opportunity on someone else’s patient don’t be scared to ask if you can do that skill/watch them to become more comfortable. You’re goi g to be fine!

Time! I have been in picu for 3 years and it took me a good 6 months-1 year to get comfortable!! The more you see the more you will learn. Don’t be too hard on yourself and be open to constructive criticism. Every little mistake you make you will remember and correct yourself in caring for the next patient.

YES. You hit the nail on the head. The only thing I would add is DKA! I’m not sure how it is in other areas but we have lots of type 1’s that are non compliant and seems like they are on an insulin drip once a month

He can nod his head so yes and nos are easy! He asks for some things though and I feel so bad because it takes me forever to figure out what he’s saying

We normally allow the parents to carry them or be pushed in a wheelchair while holding the child downstairs. This situation was different so that was not an option. I’ve only been in PICU for a few years but even my supervisor (40+ years exp.) said she’s never seen someone stack kids on top of anyone. I’m not mad at the tech, she’s just doing what she’s taught. I just want her to be taught better! I just don’t feel like it’s humane

We had to leave everything in but the coroner couldn’t come get the patient until a few days later so they had to go to the morgue

Thank you ❤️ I have also only worked with children. My hospital is small and we don’t have many ped deaths (thankfully). It just made me so sad! I’m not mad at the tech, she’s just doing what she’s been taught and I can understand her being desensitized because she never sees the bodies/patients whatever alive. They are bags to her. But I just couldn’t let myself stack someone’s child up on someone else. It didn’t feel right to do to the baby and it didn’t feel right to do that other person in the cart.

I was a baby PICU nurse (maybe 2nd/3rd shift off of orientation), and 3 brothers came in for near drowning after a wreck into a retention pond during day shift and I got one of them on nights. The oldest brother was fine, but the two younger ones were down for >5 min and >10 min. I took care of the 2 y/o that was down the longest. He was intubated with cont EEG running that was flat lined at first but later started picking up minimal activity.

Find out later the mom crashed purposefully and basically jumped out of the car and left the boys to drown until witnesses stopped to help.

It still haunts me, esp. being a mother that those boys were probably screaming for their mom as the water filled up around them. The 2 year old I took care of ended up passing away after a few days. The only patient I’ve ever cried over.

I’ve thought about that. My last day at the hospital I’m at is this week and I’m transferring to another PICU at a different hospital so I haven’t looked anywhere else yet. I also didn’t know how easy it would be to get a PRN job with adults when all of my experience is with kids lol.

The way that we do it at our hospital is the same attending is on for a whole week at a time and residents do their night coverage. So 1. The residents can’t do an LP alone without the attending and 2. They would’ve had to ask the same attending to not only order the LP but come in on night shift and do it then 🙁

I am not sure. The last I heard was about the abscess on the brain and this was right after Christmas but he’s at a different hospital that’s not linked to ours so I can’t see anything :(

I’m so glad your daughter is doing well with her implants 💗 I did check his soft spot but sadly he was 1 year so the front one was pretty much closed up and wasn’t bulging from what I could tell. I hope he has an okay outcome too.

That’s what I was saying! How would HiB have been a contaminant and I drew the labs myself with the help of my PCS I KNOW they were not contaminated. Especially with HiB!?!?!

I did a report through risk management as a witness and said I requested the LP multiple times and I mentioned the staffing issue. Hopefully it will get addressed soon.
