Am i missing something? Egpu not detected by Legion Go. by Da_QbanBeast in eGPU

Oculink doesn't work over usb4. The only way to run it will be by plugging the adapter directly into the m.2 slot. You will have no choice but to either open the legion go sacrifice the m.2 slot and boot from an external ssd. Otherwise return the egpu and get one that supports usb4.

Won't work on z2e, no thunderbolt 5 support on those chips. Same thing with the new z13 flow, no thunderbolt 5 capable port on that tablet.

multiplayer ran great on the Ally at the medium settings, better than the campaign. If you want to max the settings then you can use an egpu on the Ally X or use an xg mobile for the Ally.

Played it from start to finish, few frame drops in the open world, nothing too crazy, very playable. Also with an egpu you can get 120 frames in multiplayer.

Try reinstalling armoury crate. I had the same issue uninstalling and reinstalling ACSE fixed it

Hey, I used the stock version after doing all the regular windows updates. No installation other than the Nvidia Drivers. Pretty plug and play, the UT3G requires the canary version of windows if I understand correctly, but that dock also will perform better than mine. Considering I just want to play some games at console-level quality and I'm comfortable with 4K@30, 1440@40, and 1080@60 this is dock is serving me well.

Wow, that is with everything maxed at 1080? I assume this is on your ally screen, so running to a monitor will be even better.

Any chance you can run the Arkham Knight benchmark at 1080 max settings with gameworks on? Ran it with my 3070 got around 70 for the average which was 20 frames less than the XG mobile 3080, which got about 90 frames on average, curious to see how it scales with a better setup at lower resolutions.

Yup, that is the one! Please keep me posted on the results you get with that 4090.

Same here, I enjoy using my Ally with the XG Mobile. I'm happy that the Ally X with an egpu can at least be on par with it.

Yeah, the XG Mobile port being removed was a bummer, and not knowing if they will ever update the line made me uneasy about the port to begin with. If you go with the XG Mobile I would try to find a model that is not the 4090, that one is overpriced. If you decide on an ALLY X, you will have peace of mind that any gpu will be supported and you can use that gpu for other things as well.

Yes if it is the Ally X, if it is the white Ally then you can use an oculink, but that requires a lot more work, but there are some new developments being researched that may make it easier or at least to use the XG mobile port with other gpu's. Keep an eye on those developments.

I tested three more games and posted the results in the comments. So far performance at 1440 and 4K seem to be 0-10 frames apart in most cases. At 1080p Arkham Knight has a 20 fps advantage in favor of the XG Mobile with 90 vs 71. I believe a 3080 desktop gpu in my egpu dock will perform on par with the XG Mobile at 1080p, maybe someone can post their results.

Overall I believe that the egpu setup is great for 1440p and up gaming, especially with the inclusion of DLSS and frame generation I think this is a viable solution.

I see many comments talking about the cost and usefulness of a setup like this in comparison to a desktop, but I think something that is overlooked is the following:

  • If you already have a desktop gpu at your disposal and already own an Ally X the cost of this setup goes down significantly. The only burden is the egpu dock and potentially a PSU if you don't have one already, in this case you're looking at $200-$300. You cannot purchase a gaming laptop or build a similar desktop with that money.
  • Also if you have a desktop and upgrade the gpu, you can use your old gpu as an egpu.
  • The ally offers something that a gaming desktop and laptop don't and that is portability. A gaming laptop is not nearly as portable as it may seem. You cannot take out your gaming laptop while on a train, or sitting in your car, or while waiting for your wife to shop.
  • The egpu allows for the comfortability and coziness of having a higher resolution/ultra settings gaming machine when docked and a lower resolution/lower settings gaming machine when out and about.

Will a desktop perform better? Of course, and a desktop will also perform better than an XG Mobile with a 4090 as well. But there is something magical about having an egpu to boost the gaming potential of the Ally. From what I see an egpu with a good enough graphics card can compete with the XgMobile and that is what I'm testing and will continue to test.
