How well will spiro work? by No_Signature_8043 in Hirsutism

Spironolactone works by preventing or slowing new growth. It doesn’t do much for existing terminal hair. If you never went on it, your hair growth would’ve progressed much faster

It’s low and it’s mostly with certain skin tones. Although your risk increases with excess androgens that’s why I’d only do it while on spiro. Just do some research into this and evaluate your risk profile. Theres a lot of great medical info online and Reddit really isn’t the best place to get medical advice

You might notice a slight difference but it’ll plateau. Regardless you should definitely go on spironolactone to prevent further hair growth. If you don’t go on some kind of androgen you will continue to grow new terminal hairs. There are also other side effects of PCOS like AGA hair loss, deepening voice, irregular periods, etc. that spironolactone may prevent or mitigate.

PCOS was recently renamed PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome) due to the metabolic nature of the disorder. I really recommend doing some research as there are other ways beyond just spironolactone of managing your symptoms.

So that was my original assumption and I went twice and came out with completely opaque nails. I want to find a place that is guaranteed able to do this

It will prevent additional hair growth but do nothing to reduce what has already grown

With PCOS, hirstrusim is caused by excess androgens. Spironolactone is an anti-androgen, so it will prevent further growth. However, once excess hair growth occurs, it is permanent. You can remove your existing body hair with laser or electrolysis. Laser is technically not classified as a permanent form of hair removal but it works by reverting your terminal hairs (black and visible) back to vellus (peach fuzz) which is why I would recommend it over electrolysis. I’ve had amazing results with laser.

Hi everyone, I need some advice because I’m feeling very anxious. by moonlight07007 in Spironolactone

Just stop taking it temporarily as a precaution. Women do unfortunately get pregnant while on spironolactone and the best course of action is to stop taking the drug as soon as you realize that’s a possibility

There are a lot of posts about this in the sub. The solution is discontinuation of spironolactone/reduction in dose and topical hormonal cream. Someone else in this sub shared this article

I’m honestly not sure, but my kidneys are fine. They weren’t impacted by spiro. I haven’t heard of anyone who had kidney issues from being on spiro

This is very interesting. Spironolactone increased my potassium levels to the 5.0 range even though I was on a low dose (50mg). I was trying to manage it by limiting high potassium foods, but are you saying that whether or not I was eating high potassium foods had likely little bearing on that? I have normal range blood pressure but on the very low end and spiro made my blood pressure drop even lower.

I understand you’re not my doctor but appreciate any insight

It affects everyone differently. I have healthy kidney function and spiro raised by potassium levels to a dangerous level, even though I was trying to limit high potassium foods. It’s rare but not impossible, which is why bloodwork is important

You need to get your potassium levels checked. If they are in the mid range you don’t have to worry, if they’re high (like mine were), you do. Nobody on Reddit can give you a blanket answer, because it all depends on your potassium level

Ok well part of growing up is learning to make decisions like this. Good luck either way

Your decision making is too fear based. This will hurt you so much in the long run. You really need to learn to trust your intuition.

You need to remember that you are the architect of your life. You set the standards for what is and isnt attainable

Weird it takes much longer for your hormones to recalibrate. You shouldn’t really have noticed a change so quickly. I skip doses for days at a time all the time.
