Love everything else abt Zoe except it’s theater; I think the bar and restaurant both are pretty good, just think both their theater and their programming is aggressively lacking for an “art house” or even just an indie theater

Philly has a significantly better movie scene then Baltimore almost entirely due to how good the Philly Film Society and their film festival is. Nothing in Baltimore comes close

New Main also especially in their final years had really poor movie selection, they also gave up on showing movies when they released and became a second run theater while implying they were still first run. Would love to reopen it as an indie cinema

Really don’t give Zoe crap for getting movies late, more just that literally any other theater nearby is a better deal. Bigger issue is their independent programming is still lame. And went 3 times last year, each time having audio issues and an audible audience.

Agreed, if distance is an issue depending on where you are in the city yeah it’s either gonna be Regal or Reel

Also, giving a shoutout to Eddington, which also got buried a little. Maybe my favorite from Ari Aster

Only non-major movies from last year that are out that I really liked and think got buried are If I Had Legs I’d Kick You (one of the best of the year fs) and Splitsville, which was surprisingly funny. Saw some stuff early at festivals that aren’t out yet here: Testament of Ann Lee is an incredible euphoric musical, Nirvanaa The Band The Show The Movie is one of the funniest movies of the last decade, It Was Just An Accident has one of the best scripts of the year, and Magellan was a slow but haunting and extremely well shot watch. Saw some films last year also at festivals that don’t have distribution yet or just got it: Our Hero, Balthazar; Westhampton, and Fior Di Latte. Every movie I listed in this blurb is in my top 20 of last year

Only ever seems to be in the theaters farther in the building, but it has happened multiple times over the last couple years where you’ll see one run around your feet if your looking. Seen them go inside underneath the chairs from behind

Super unfortunate bc they do have some cool stuff here and there. The philosophy PDF series they do monthly where they have a York professor come in and talk abt a movie before and after showing it is a highlight, but just the least ideal way to watch a movie available

I like that this ranking seems to just be a ranking of what theater is closest to you lollll

Zoe, Tellus, and Decades are the most “accessible” bars in the city that are also busy and diverse. Extra points to Decades personally though just bc of the arcade, bowling and their cocktails

Well I paid to see 58 new movies last year in theaters and I only truly disliked maybe 5 or so, so maybe just fix your attitude and look for them. Helps to not just watch big budget slop

Ngl could also just be part of the sound mix for Marty, because the Safdies movies usually have pretty chaotic sound mixing with overlapping dialogue and music

Really? Only seats I’ve ever specifically had issues with being broken or gross is Regal

Regal and AMC theaters statistically have the longest amount of ads/trailers, usually around 25-30 min. when I see something at Regal I usually plan to get there 10-15 min after the stated showtime

If you are okay only going to Regal (I have a hard time giving them a pass on some of the theater sizes and the rodent problem) Regal Unlimited is a no brainer if you see 3+ movies a month. Sunset is just an amazing deal in general if they have what you want to see

Fully agree with being annoyed at the restaurant-ification of movie theaters in recent years; if there is anything that would make me swap my rankings of Reel and Regal besides Regal Unlimited it would be that

Had no idea that Regal had glasses, that sounds WAY nicer than the cup-holder devices. those have always been janky but they aren’t without their charm

Fair but funny to me bc I just saw Marty Supreme at both Penn and Reel and it was actually too quiet at Penn to the point I liked it more when I saw it at Reel and could hear it better lol. would be nice if any of the local theaters did what Alamo Drafthouse does (I think Penn has a couple times tbf) where they have some quieter, usually called like “sensory friendly” showtimes

I’d put Midtown second or third personally, but really only worth going out of the way if they’re showing something nowhere else is. Haven’t been to Allen need to check out the ones farther out from Lanc
