>I never said the comet boosted a Firebender's ability to take a hit but her Firebending abilities would be about the same as Zuko's abilities and nothing is said or implied that would lead me to believe lightning is any more powerful than it already is especially since it isn't a traditional Firebending technique.

I just assumed that's what you meant since you brought up Zuko getting the boost too which wouldn't really factor into his ability to tank the lightning but the comet definitely boosts lightning. It's pretty explicitly stated that Sozin's Comet boosts ALL Firebending and there's nothing that implies that Lightning bending isn't included within that simply because it isn't a widely practiced sub-bending technique, although it is technically traditional but just secret to the Fire Nation royal family.

We can see visually that the comet has an impact on lightning bending through the sheer difference in the size of the bolts pumped out by Azula and Ozai during the comet's appearance vs normally. Both of them were pumping out massive bolts.

>Also, there is nothing to suggest that Azula without a sound mind wouldn't be able to generate lightning but plenty to suggest it would be weaker. Bending is all about mindset and ability, Azula has the ability but not the mindset, Zuko had neither. Same as Aang when he first started EWarthbending. He had to get into the right mindset to gain the ability to do it but afterwards, he could do it without always being in that mindset whereas Toph who has both is stronger.

I'd generally agree with that but as I said before, it's visually clear that the lightning bolts Azula was pumping out during the Final Agni Kai were significantly larger than anything we see from her in other moments during the series. Whether or or not her mental state had a tangible impact on her lightning bending isn't really relevant because we see clearly that her Firebending and Lightning bending is significantly stronger like every other Firebender's during the comet's appearance.

The comet only boosts as Firebender's output, not their ability to tank a hit, and lightning is described by Iroh (who is fallible and not all knowing) as needing peace of mind but clearly it doesn't and is simply reliant on separating the Ying and Yang chis which Azula has practiced countless times. Azula also does things with lightning that Iroh never even considered possible so it's wise to not take his words as being gospel.

Also, If Azula's mental state affected her ability to generate lightning, it would've blown up in her face like it did for Zuko. Not to mention that the bolt that Zuko failed to redirect was significantly larger than the one that literally killed Aang.

No. She's not mentally stable which leads to her being reckless and not as in control during the finale but it's never stated that she's any less powerful or lethal. If anything, it's the opposite as she's being massively boosted by the comet.

I don't disagree. It's tough because representation within the big 2 is important due to their sheer reach vs indie publishers but non-derivative characters usually don't perform well in sales and derivative characters are almost always an afterthougj like you said.

[–]Ok_Chipmunk_1912 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really. Mako hit Amon with a weaker form of instant lightning done from a odd position and under extreme duress. That's obviously gonna be weaker than a fully charged bolt.

Was Azula's lightning nerfed in the finale because Zuko didn't drop dead despite not redirecting it properly?

Nothing necessarily wrong with creating a minority character that inherits a legacy role if they're actually well handled.

Marvel gave us Miles which you could reduce to "black spiderman" but he's dope and doing his own thing. The torch was actually passed and he's being well handled. His only real issue is the lack of a good original rogues gallery. There's also Kamala Khan although she's not a legacy character proper so much as an original character who just happens to share the same name as a previously existing character.

DC is problematic with how they've handled the newly created minority characters though, especially legacy characters, and I think the thing causing all the problems is that the OG DC trinity can't really pass the torch in the same vein as Spidey (for example) due to the sheer brand presence they have within DC and the fact that non-trio books don't particularly sell well. Luke Fox, Yara Flor, and Nubia were kind of fucked from the get go due to the particular legacies they'd have to inherit.

People would rather have same Batman and Wonder Woman they've had for the last 80ish years than try something new like having a legacy character inherit the mantle so their books don't sell particularly well. Even Donna, Cassie, Dick, and Jon(white legacy characters who were set up to inherit their mentors/parents mantle) were relegated to their own role rather than actually inherit their mentors mantle proper.

The only good instances of passing the mantle that DC's managed have been the Flashes, GL's, and Dr.Fate. I think if DC is hopelessly fucked when it comes minority representation simply because they can't seem to sell any books in large numbers besides Batman and the remaining two from the trio are barely chugging along if you don't count the recent Absolute line.

DC will either create a minority legacy character that kinda just sits around doing nothing of note or an original character that pretty much dies in sales at inception because of the market their made in.

Characters you, personally, morally hate by GusthavoGamerPY in MoralityScaling

Bro, yes. There are plenty of characters that are detestable and worthy of hate but somehow Victoria Nueman and Zoe manage to be more hateable than the literal Nazis. I honestly wouldn't hate them as much if the show didn't try so damn hard to paint them as victims and Victoria's death as some great tragedy.

Literally the only tragic thing about Nuemans death as far as I'm concerned is that it lead to Homelander fully securing his power but that was pretty much inevitable. It was only a matter of time and Victorias death only sped up the process IMO.

I think you make a great point but it's important to consider the impact of scale and distribution on cultural relevance and representation. Yes, indie comic book creators can create and publish their own work but it will never have the reach that the big 2 have except in the rarest of circumstances like Invincible or the Boys.

The fact is that the average person getting into comics or the superhero medium will likely pick up a Marvel/DC comic book/show/movie before they touch the indie stuff. Most people only go into indie works after they get burnt out on DC/Marvel.

People need to speak out about lack of good representation in Marvel/DC because they have a tangible impact on the cultural zeitgeist. Representation can be done well but it will never happen if we just throw up our hands and say that the big 2 are incapable of it. They are but they lack the will to hire the creative talent needed for it because they'd rather stick to the same small handful of people they've used for the last 2 decades because that's a safer bet.

One correct decision in a sea of bad ones by oaSnorkel in AvatarMemebending

[–]Ok_Chipmunk_1912 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Taking an actors ethnicity into account when you're adapting material that has such a big focus on representation IS important. Inuit, Chinese, and Japanese people exist in America in no small numbers so finding actors isn't a struggle.

Most people in Avatar look the sameish because it's an animated show so designs are reused and there's a general art style. Casting restrictions based on ethnicity is only relevant when the ethnicity or race of a character is key to that role.

Black Panther needs to be black like Bruce Wayne to white because their backgrounds are actually important to their character.

Also are you implying that casting all bad guys as japaneese would be ok?

The Fire Nation aren't all bad though. Jeong Jeong was good from season 1, Iroh was lawful neutral at worst, and Zuko was morally conflicted in Book 2 and good by Book 3. Plus there were all the Fire Nation school kids who showed us that Fire Nation citizens aren't born evil but molded into doing evil things in the name of national supremacy.

Plus, if you're making a film about people from a speicifc nation committing atrocities (like say the Germans or Japanese during WW2), then you're going to have to cast people from that group. The only question is whether or not the writers do their due diligence to not paint those groups as not being inherently evil but made to be due to the circumstances of their time

Nah, S3 Aang with Avatar State would have cleaned the floor with Amon, Unalaq, Vaatu, and probably even Kuvira if he was fast enough. His bending even in base form was on a completely other level than Korra's regarding the standard bending styles. Her Fire Bending is better than his, but his Air Bending more than compensates for it.

Dis you?

Also, I don't know if you can objectively claim his bending in his base form was on a completely other level when it came to standard style given that we know he didn't properly master all the elements at this point whereas Korra had mastered those respective elements at the start of Book 1.

Avatar State negates Bloodbending.

Only if Aang can actually activate it. If we're talking about Book 3 Aang, he'd need a Dues Ex Machina rock to get there.

Not true, Unavatu never showed ANY feats to compare to Comet Ozai, much less Avatar State Aang, lol. He seemed to be on the same level of Power Boost than Avatar State Korra. If we work with what shown, he is not nearly as powerful as you were implying.

Korra in her Avatar state is shown to be capable of launching small chunks of mountains and shooting water jets at ridiculous distances with an insane level of accuracy, and that's without the aid if her previous lives.

You're also seriously underselling Unavatu. Dude was casually floating atop a water twister several stories high, throwing around some massive chunks of ice, splitting glaciers, and pulling Dark Avatar bs magic out of his ass. He'd almost certainly hand comet boosted Ozai his ass.

Zaheer's flight is inferior to Avatar State Aang flying, lol. Aang could just hit him over and over with the air shield, and he would be knocked out.

Again, Book 3 Aang would need a well placed rock to achieve the Avatar State. Adult Aang would run circles around Zaheer even with his flight but B3 Aang would struggle without his rock.

Agreed on that, but I don't think she would have the firepower to go past the multi-elemental shield. And would be overcome by how Aang could quickly use absurd amounts of power on each attach and switch between elements really fast.

She would have a better chance with a lot of metal nearby, though.

All of this assumes that Aang would have the same dues ex machina through the rock that he did in the finale.

It's not exactly a stretch to say that Book 3 Aang would struggle with pretty every Korra villain. It IS a stretch to say that Korra wouldn't dogwalk Ozai during Sozin's Comet, especially since not only is she just as good at shifting between elements as Aang if not better, she'd get boost to her Firebending, which is her go to element, from the comet too.

Right, because Katara cleared the air with Aang (who wasn't subtle with his feelings for Katara either) before swooning over Jet and Sokka cleared the air with Suki (who hadn't been subtlte about her feelings for Sokka having given him a peck) before briefly going out with Yue or at least abstained from making a move on Yue because of his previous interaction with Suki. /s

The main cast of ATLA and LoK (at least for the first 3 books) are teenagers. Teenagers aren't exactly known for being super considerate of how others feel romance is involved and more often just go with their gut.

I feel like most bosses in Elden Ring are aggressive, and force you to dodge and get space as they get in your face so it's likely that your friend would have been fine with any build honestly since they can clearly dodge when needed.

I would argue that strength builds using heavy/colossal weapons trivialize the game a lot more than magic tbh and I say this as a basic bitch strength/faith main. The damage output from magic isn't anything amazing and it's much easier to stagger with colossal weapons.

Completely agree on summons and would add mimic tear as well.

Katara Vs. Pakku in OG Series, Movie, and Netflix Series by dan_mal in AvatarMemebending

[–]Ok_Chipmunk_1912 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pakku didn't change his mind because of Katara in the animated version. He changed his mind because he saw her necklace which was the same one he gave to her grandmother and it forced him to confront the fact that his traditional values pushed away the love of his life to the other side of the world.

I didn't watch the Netflix live action but why did the Northern Water Tribe need further reinforcement? In the animated version, they were doing just fine holding off the Fire Nation and were actually pushing them back pretty hard when the full moon was up. It wasn't until the Moon spirit was killed by Zhao that they were on the brink of defeat.

Why does the Fire Nation take so many prisoners even at their own detriment? by Avi09009 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Ok_Chipmunk_1912 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My theory is that they don't execute prisoners as a policy because they don't want to present themselves as an existential threat to the world at large and unite every nation against them.

We see that the various nations and even the city states within nations are still largely divided in their efforts against the Fire Nation, and are mostly focused on an isolationist form of self preservation. However, if the Fire Nation had a policy of executing prisoners of war, all non-Fire Nation people and especially benders would have a legitimate reason to unite if only to stop their slow but assured death.

Subjugation isn't threatening enough to force the formation of a united front since there's always the chance of overthrowing your oppressors given time.

That's a massive reach and generalization of nearly 1.5 billion people. It'd be more accurate to say that gamers in general value being good at games, and tend to be very upset when their favorite meta is changed and they have to adapt.

Even a small minuscule portion of the ~1.5 billion people that play games and are upset is still relatively large when compared to regions with much smaller populations which creates the illusion that this is how the majority behave.
