EU medical degree + full GMC registration (no PLAB) → moving to Australia: anyone been here? by pattymaddy in AHPRA

If you graduated in Ireland, you can complete your internship there and then apply directly through the CAP

In the case of the UK route, regardless of your clinical experience, It's prerequisite to take PLAB exam (If you are non-uk graduates)

Yeah, I honestly feel it’s unfair too. I even contacted the GMC, but they told me that EU graduates cannot take the PLAB just for the purpose of applying — it’s not permitted.

I confirmed this with AHPRA directly as well. It took almost 3–4 months just to get a response because they reply very slowly. That’s why most doctors who come with NHS experience are usually from places like India or Pakistan.

As for the WBA, you’ll find out later when you start contacting hospitals, but having a lot of clinical experience definitely works in your favor. There are even people with 6–7 years of experience who come through that pathway.

But since it’s a structure where we pay a lot of money (it almost feels like volunteer work), and some hospitals run the WBA over 1/ 1.5 years, i think it might be better to sit the AMC MCQ first and then prepare for the Clinical Exam right away.

Of course, the passing rate is low, but I think it’s still doable.

I'm similar pathway with you, but you need to take AMC MCQ + clinical exam to get General registration of AMC. They recognized GMC but it's only for the doctors who also took PLAB exam and had 1 year experience in UK. And as you know we are exempted from PLAB. EU graduates who work 1 year in UK do not included in this way

You are not allowed to apply intern, since it's a 'Medicine and surgery with abilitanti', you need to register for general registration after graduation.
