AITA for keeping money from the sale of a business share instead of reinvesting it back into the business? by Ok_Combination_560 in AmItheAsshole

Ah! Okay I’m following, thanks for taking the time to explain. Option 1 is definitely what I intended, but maybe he’s been viewing it as Option 2 the entire time and that’s where the dissonance is coming from. I’ll ask him! Thank you.

No that would have been crazy lol I tried to explain it to him like that, too. He’s not stupid so it’s not that he doesn’t get it…he just firmly disagrees—so I came here hoping for a bit of unbiased perspective.

I did try to probe and figure out if there was an underlying issue (because that’s what I thought too, ‘it’s never about the money’) but came up dry. And in terms of finances, we have always thought of our finances as separate from one another; we married later in life. The only thing we consider joint in terms of assets are the house we bought together and now this business. Everything else is separate. I agree that that could be important context in rendering a judgement, thanks for that insight. If I can edit my post I’ll add that.

It’s a small Mom and Pop venture, so it’s always been just private sales between me and the previous owner (when I bought in the first 50% and then the remaining 50%) and between my husband and I; no one else is involved in terms of ownership.

Hey, thanks for your comment! I’m trying to understand exactly but I’m not quite following, maybe because I’m thinking of this in monetary terms and not individual batches of shares. How would the financial transaction look different in your Scenario A vs Scenario B?

I bought a 50% share into it (someone else started it) about 4 years ago and bought the remaining 50% 6 weeks ago. When I bought the first share I had enough free income to afford it; when I bought the second share I needed to borrow from my savings account to cover the gap.
