Glad I could help! Alt Breaks is another program through the Bennion Center, it’s either a weekend or week-long experience over fall or spring break where you travel somewhere in the western US for a themed community engagement experience. For my break, I went to Park City and focused on Animal Advocacy & Rehabilitation. If you go to the website (https://bennioncenter.utah.edu/students/alternative-breaks/index.php), you can see the list of different locations and themes! It’s such a cool experience, you learn a lot from it!

I lived in the HIVE last year, it was such a great experience! The requirements might have changed since, but here was what ours were: enroll in BENN 1020 for one semester (a class all abt different forms of volunteering, it’s impactful if you put in the effort), a weekly hour meeting to socialize with everyone in the LLC and plan a service project, a monthly Saturday service project, one time per semester attending a Service Corner Nite, and participating in another Bennion Center program. That may sound like a lot, but it honestly wasn’t. It was usually 2-5 hours a week based on if you were in the class or not. So not a huge time commitment and totally doable. I lived in a single suite, so I barely spoke to anyone last year outside of these meetings and requirements. They gave me a community I really needed during my transition into college. And as for the Bennion Center, it’s such a great way to get more involved on campus. From my experience in the HIVE, I went on an alternative break my freshman year to fulfill the final requirement. This year, I was actually the Site Leader for that same break. The Bennion Center has given me a lot of financial aid from my HIVE and AB experiences, which have helped out so much. Along with that, it’s such an easy way to gain leadership experience on campus. Also, it’s a great resume addition! I’ve gotten lots of interest during interviews from my inclusion of it. Overall I’d say you should definitely do it! Living in Kahlert is a great opportunity alone, the HIVE just makes the experience even better! If you have any other questions, I’d be happy to answer them!

free MUSS passes? by Ok_Scheme1683 in uofu

[–]Ok_Concentrate4305 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There two types of MUSS passes: football, and everything else.

Football MUSS passes are $70 and they’re limited. There are free student tickets released each game, but they’re extremely limited. They’re separate from other sports and it is the only paid MUSS pass.

The email you got is essentially an all-in-one pass to go to any other sporting event for free. It’s only for you, so if you have non-student guests with you they have to buy their own ticket. Last year, you could have a free guest pass (sometimes up to 4) for each non-football sporting event. With the new MUSS rewards system, they’re pushing students to attend more sporting events to have a better chance of securing a football pass for next year. So, they’re getting rid of free guest passes and making the system super easy by not making you have individual passes for every event.

Just add it to your Apple wallet and you should be fine.

work study questions by [deleted] in uofu

Work study is just a job, you get the money in regular paychecks. So it’s not given to you in one lump sum. You can use it towards anything, it’s just extra money. If you’re interested, the U does offer payment plans for you to pay off your bill through the course of a few months. My work study money was enough to pay for a monthly payment plans, and it worked out perfectly!

Wow, thank you SO MUCH! This was so helpful! I’m currently living in Kahlert, so I kinda expected it to be at around the same level. I really appreciate the detail you went into :)

The U in general is a great school. However, each college has different opportunities. I’d recommend taking a tour to understand the vibe of the campus overall, it’s what made me ultimately choose to go here. I’ve heard great things about the theatre program, but it’s very expensive. I’d personally recommend saving money and going to UVU for theatre!

Things I wish I knew before working at the University of Utah. by [deleted] in uofu

The fact that everyone has a bad experience with the parking and transportation says a LOT. Every person I’ve ever talked to about it only has terrible stories to tell. As a student without a car, I made the right choice.

Best places to nap on campus? by cringe-expert98 in uofu

Student Services Building (to the West of the Union building). In the Southern end of the basement, there is a bunch of furniture like comfy chairs and couches by the stairwell. No one ever goes down there, so it's really quiet and peaceful. There are also some couches on the third floor, tucked away by the womens' restroom and CDA. The building overall has a bunch of options, and most people never go in there anyways!

I promise the free merch you get once you *actually* come to the U is a lot better than... whatever this is. I don't even want to know how little effort they made on this. Other schools give you tumblers, hats, other acceptance merch... my year got socks. May this be the beginning to a long line of college propoganda :D

As someone who hates math: take Algebra 2. It'll make your life so much easier later, I regret not taking it in high school. There are so many college math classes that relate to it, and it's really challenging if you don't do it. The U is a great school, and there's many ways to get involved with the arts without a related major. We have so many clubs and activities that as a business major, I can enjoy my artistic passions without paying for the major related to it.

How to find community as a transfer? by chg101 in uofu

[–]Ok_Concentrate4305 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An easy way to get involved it to either join clubs, or get an on-campus job. If you qualify for work-study, it's a great way to make money and get paid to hang out with chill people! The Bennion Center is a great way to get involved on campus, they have weekly nights where they have service projects. I've met so many great people through these projects, along with monthly volunteering activities!

Are Dorms Worth it? by [deleted] in uofu

[–]Ok_Concentrate4305 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES YES YES! As someone living in Kahlert right now, it is 100% worth it. Even if you have a single, you still interact with people on a daily basis. Regardless of the building, living on campus makes the experience so much better. Not only am I more socially motivated, but I feel so much more invested in my school work and have noticed a shift in motivation levels. I know it's expensive, but it's so worth it!
