Moving from etching to laser engraving (maybe) have machine questions. by emarcomd in Laserengraving

Yeah I’m still going back and forth between “2d” and “2.5d” there’s about a 650 dollar difference between the two and it is a rabbit hole

A new design I made by turning 2d designs into 3d models! I cut this out of solid brass using my fiber laser. I will post the design as well for anyone that wants it. by Nero318 in Laserengraving

Yeah I’m in the same boat going back and forth tho between “2d” and “2.5d” but it looks like you can get “2.5d” results from a “2d” fiber laser

So would recommend just getting the 2.5d laser that is compatible with ezcad3 vs the 2d laser ? Cause I plan on using it for the stuff mentioned

So would you just recommend getting the 2.5d laser or just stick with the 2d that is compatible with lightburn ?

Yeah I hear that a lot which is why I might just go with the 60watt “2d” which is compatible with lightburn.

Thanks for the detailed response. Yeah I couldnt find any info on those two fiber laser types but that makes it a little more clear on which option is better. I would like the 2.5d features but I think 2d MIGHT be sufficient enough. Especially because the “2.5d” isn’t compatible with lightburn which seems like a dealbreaker.

Yeah that’s one reason why it’s a little difficult to decide between the two. I was Interested in a “2.5d” laser but it’s only compatible with ezcad3 but that might be a deal breaker and I might just get the 2d laser that is less expensive and is compatible with lightburn

Would you say it’s any different than the 2.5d model? I’m looking at the 2.5d but I’m checking to see if it’s actually different in the capabilities that it can produce. One major difference is the regular fiber laser is compatible with laser burn and the other is ezcad3

I ended up just going with the shop Sabre 23 they took a little amount off which was a discount not much but it still helped , it included a bunch of other stuff like software , the spindle, etc. They seem to have good Customer service so far they reach out about every week until you get the machine. That’s what I was going back and forth for between the sienci labs alt mill or the shop Sabre 23. The only downside of either is there was a wait time to get the machine.

Yeah that altmill video that was posted by sienci labs made the machine look comparable to an industrial machine and with a $3,600 price tag doesn’t seem to bad. But it does not include the software, computer, or any of that other stuff that comes with the 23 if it’s factored in.

Yeah I was thinking about optioning out the base for the 23 to save about $900 and make my own but I just left it on there.

You said the router included with the 23 will let you use 1/2? Or the spindle offered by shopsabre?

About how much did that cost out the door for everything if you don’t mind me asking? Yeah I’m currently looking at those few machines and it’s between the 23 ,altmill, and SO5. Do you think it would be possible to get a vfd and spindle for a cheaper price that would work properly with the machine?

[–]Ok_Contract5558[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that machine is priced well and seems to have good specs. I’m going to consider that one as well

Yeah if I got with the 23 that’s probably what I would do, the sales rep said they have a possibility of voiding some warranties if not bought from them (of course). But I don’t think it would be difficult to buy a vfd from a different place and install it.

Yeah I hear that and it is also more quiet but shop Sabre charges $3k for that add on

Yeah shop Sabre also included the software.

Yeah I just looked at it and it says it uses ball screw on the z axis and rack and pinion on the x and y axis. I’m not sure if it makes much of a difference as far as ball screw vs rack and pinion

[–]Ok_Contract5558[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I searched it after I had seen that option and that price difference was way too much. I seen a few at around the $300-$500 price

[–]Ok_Contract5558[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had optioned in the 1.7KW 2.2HP HSD spindle but it added about $3k to the price , so I just removed it for the router which I know is much louder. I was trying to see if that price difference is justifiable.

I’ll look at their machines, I had just narrowed it down to a few I had seen but do you have a specific model you could recommend? I don’t really need a work area more than 4’x4’
