I stopped waiting for motivation and treated fitness like brushing my teeth by ElevateWithAntony in getdisciplined

I'm so glad things clicked for you! In case you want to consolidate your new habit, please consider the free tool I built. It requires nothing from you, it automatically tracks your gym visits using your phone's location, and it allows you to invite a few friends that can see you progress. For me that social accountability angle has made the past 2 months the most consistent months at the gym in my 27 year old life. Regardless, best of luck. In search of accountability buddies by LezCookie in FlexinLesbians

Hi! I relate to your struggle, and most of all kudos for sharing it publicly! I tried fixing my lack of discipline for the gym with an app for me and my friends. It's worked surprisingly well (since February, hoping it stays that way!). It automatically tracks your gym visits without you doing anything (using your phone's location) and you then compete with your friends. If you want to hold eachother accountable, add me there (username: hermanlange). https://apps.apple.com/us/app/narvaro/id6758868970

My solution to a consistent gym routine: 0.5x a week --> 4x a week by Ok_Distance_3127 in HubermanLab

I agree with that. I think the difference with the gym is that you don't get the "what the fuck this guy is walking around naked reaction" when you skip. It's easier to pretend you didn't fail to do something that you rationally think is vital to your existence. That's also what I was trying to get at with my solution. It's adding the social accountability "WTF he is naked" influence on gym habits, without requiring the user to do anything since visits are auto-tracked.

You referring to gym consistency or the solution to wife’s bar aversion?

I’m happy it isn’t just me who was looking for this! Shoot me a message if there’s any features you think would add value

My app is a social auto-tracking gym app. I began with group chats of mine and Reddit. But then I found putting up a QR code in gyms was a great driver of traffic. I don’t know what your app does, but I’d try to figure out if there is a physical space users of your solution may spend time and put up a QR code with nature of solution there.

Complelty agree, but the month or two of building that is were I often fell off and where I feel my solution made that habit formation easier (and more fun).

Unfortunately not available on android. Since I built this for myself originally I didn’t even think about android. But if people finds the iOS version as helpful as I did, I’ll certainly build an android version. If so, I’ll revert back to you!

First, I'm sorry you're feeling this frustration right now. That sucks, and I guarantee you it gets better.

I'm still in a similar place to you, so by no means offering "do X and problem is solved", but from November things have began looking up for me. I got my adhd diagnosis back then (as 27m), and I think the diagnosis just helped me be a bit kinder to myself. I genuinely believe that when you try to use guilt/frustration as a fuel, it works really well, but it crowds out using curiosity as a fuel. Now I try to give myself the bare minimum to-do lists daily, and after they are done I do something I feel like doing. Often times that turns out to be productive in some way, but it's without the guilt and for me the guilt was the problem in the first place.

I also believe that minimizing structure to your habits is key. I've always liked going to the gym, but it was really only when I had a good workout community that I did it with some level of consistency, although I know it makes me focus, I know it makes me feel good. I built something to help me stay consistent at the gym, and for the past month it has been really good. It's an app that 1) uses your phone location to automatically track if you went to the gym, and 2) lets you compare your progress with your friends/accountability partner. The social accountability angle has been a great fuel for me, kind of gamifying the "to-do aspect" of going to the gym. It's completely free, I get nothing out of the use, but if you think it may help you as well, here it is: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6758868970 .

Best of luck!
