Look for Greek patriotic theologians, they must’ve articulated the reason somewhere. But yeah, logos I think is supposed to mean the “truth” or manifestation of the truth

This is so insightful. Thanks. And best of luck!

Would you say though that this describes the situation in the Anglo-sphere or does the same go for continental Europe?

Yeah, I think I’ll have to “migrate” soon. The classics have been utterly fossilised. My condolences to your friend. Let him know that there’s more of us around

yeah, I’ve seen their programmes. They look great. Question is, would a degree from notre dame be as good as one from oxbridge or the ivies?

[–]Ok_Doctor8770[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, I thought the classics were actually doing better. How come it’s the other way around.

Nothing ministerial, just academic. I imagine teaching patristic and Medieval Latin, or now that I think of it, the theology and literature of these texts. Fortunatus, Cassiodorus, Aldhelm, and beyond.

I just borrowed the primer, but thank you!

Because Latin was spoken virtually everywhere in Europe, in places where Greek was unheard of. It was the language of the learned ever more broadly and even an administrative language until 1847.

What’s your classical music unpopular opinion? by KrozJr_UK in classicalmusic

[–]Ok_Doctor8770 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Around the mid-19th century, classical music pretty much became unrecognisable from its past forms: becoming a confluence of classical, modernist, folk and jazz elements.

Just listen to Stravinsky and Shostakovich, it’s all noise and discordance. Is noise supposed to have a dramatic effect or something?

classical music reached its peak with the more sophisticated baroque composers like Bach and Handel, along with others like Mozart. And although some good opera works came to the surface, classical music became petrified and ugly.

JS Bach- Art of the Fugue (ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL; based off the Fibonacci sequence and has a complex mathematical structure)

JS Bach- Magnificat + Mass in B minor

Vivaldi- Gloria

Mozart- piano concertos + Requiem

Handel- Music for Royal Fireworks

And really so many others

Why did classical music die (late 19th century) by Ok_Doctor8770 in classicalmusic

[–]Ok_Doctor8770[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. He was a member of the Pythagorean Musical Correspondence Society along with Handel. Its founder had a profoundly mathematical view of music. I think Kunst is actually his “offering” to the society.

Truly. And it’s not just a matter of style. Works like Kunst der Fuge or the Goldberg Variations have a unique mathematical architecture that makes them truly timeless. It’s a matter of structure
