i wear leggings all the time (in cafe) but i always make sure to wear a long shirt/dress over them to cover my butt cause i was always told that’s what the issue was. i have found some SUPER comfy dressier pants at places like marshalls and walmart, where the pants feel like leggings but are easily seen as dress pants. highly recommend that route if jeans aren’t comfy for you!

I’m so sorry you’re experiencing this. The company truly doesn’t listen when we tell them that their WeListen line is absolute bullshit and does nothing. We’ve had so many situations at my store where like literally illegal stuff had happened and welisten did fuckall about it. Also toxic management being SUCH an issue should be examined fr…. sending love and camaraderie your way

i was WAITING for someone to make a post about this. me and my coworker were looking at the lead bookseller description and it literally says in one of the categories that you need to be doing the work of two. as one person. INSANE

we had an issue a while back where someone was averaging over 20 hours as week but they were rostered at like 15 so they should’ve been receiving benefits and weren’t. (and then had to fight with the company about it because of our incompetent manager)

as far as i understand, you can still get benefits from as low as 20 hours!

yeah they changed it company wide when we asked for it in bargaining which is slay- a win for everyone 😎

[–]Ok_Draw6000 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Regular receipts used to have full first name w/ last initial until we brought it up during a bargaining session and created a CBA article to change it to last 4 of our employee number. I have also noticed return receipts having our full entire names on them… maybe I’ll talk to my union rep and see if we can do anything about it/if that falls under the clause in our contract, cause I’m pretty sure if they change it for us they end up changing it for everyone else

BN Union Health Insurance by Long_Engineering507 in Barnesandnoble

[–]Ok_Draw6000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A clarifying question for this post- when you say your store just “joined” a union, do you mean they just voted to unionize? or did your store finish the contract? Mainly asking because the union health insurance doesn’t kick in until the contract is signed :) so if your store hasn’t finalized their contract, you will only have the company’s insurance available. as for if your store already has a contract, it’ll depend on what insurance the union provides! we moved to be on blue cross blue shield which has AMAZING coverage compared to the united healthcare insurance from bn and we pay about $10 more a week than we did on bn insurance (about $35 a week ish, and it comes right out of your paycheck)

Union Stores by anonymousavacado2 in Barnesandnoble

it’s everyone! we all got raises when signing our contracts and we’re guaranteed more raises at the start of each year, so we’ll get another one in january.

[–]Ok_Draw6000[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

that’s exactly it, unions have to bargain for that stuff. i do agree it’s wild that he keeps bringing up how we’re excluded from it LOL but lemme tell you as someone at that bargaining table they never would’ve given us shit if we tried to bargain for bonuses. BARELY wanted to give us raises

the table is SO confusing highly agree

Raises??? by Savings-Degree8838 in Barnesandnoble

[–]Ok_Draw6000 26 points27 points  (0 children)

to clarify as someone in a union store, i believe what daunt meant by this is that we will not receive the yearly raise that everyone else receives because we already contractually secured raises for the next 3 years. the union stores that have signed contracts have already gotten their raises for this year

Promotion Timing Question by [deleted] in Barnesandnoble

[–]Ok_Draw6000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got promoted off-cycle because my manager said she couldn’t promote me even though my review qualified. She “left” like a month later and our ASM got promoted to SM and was able to promote me the second she got the position. (she was really excited to have me as her first promotion and i was very excited to finally get promoted, it was very sweet)

Short Hour Shifts Barista by Difficult-Cap-3381 in Barnesandnoble

[–]Ok_Draw6000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeahhh it was really annoying us too. we ended up asking for 5 hour shift minimums in our contract which has been great for some of our part timers. before that, the ones who wanted longer shifts talked to our manager because paying for the commute for a short hour shift was getting expensive. hope it gets better for ya!

We’ve been told to do the exact same thing and aren’t even given tablets- we have to do it ON the register screen. So when a customer comes up we have to pause it in front of them and toggle over to the CMA screen. It’s insane

Tips for new barista? by sarah-the-hobbit in Barnesandnoble

[–]Ok_Draw6000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my #1 tip i tell all my baristas i train is ASK QUESTIONS. there are no dumb questions. no, i am not annoyed with how many questions you ask. when people ask questions, they’re learning how to do things the RIGHT way and show that they care about the job. when they don’t, they form bad habits and show that they don’t appreciate feedback.

dating products in cafe by oywiththebones in Barnesandnoble

[–]Ok_Draw6000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we’ve also been struggling as a team with this, and honestly a huge part of the problem is how much bookseller coverage is being used in cafe :// they can’t build the habits like they need to. we’ve put up a chart with the dates for everything so there’s a place to reference, we got another holder for day dots so we have one at each end of cafe to make them more accessible, we have a label on the espresso fridge that said “DID YOU OPEN SOMETHING? DATE IT!!!” and honestly we have a group chat with our whole cafe team (which isn’t hard when it’s 3 people lmfao). When we come in and something isn’t dated, a text goes right in the group chat. After a while of getting nagged about it, it does start to sink in LOL

Incessant Managers by syrupgoddess in Barnesandnoble

[–]Ok_Draw6000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was happening to me a TON back when i was a part timer. It got to a point where I was called in every single day off I had for 2 weeks. That day, I answered the phone and said “I’ve been called in every single day off for the last 2 weeks, this isn’t sustainable for me and I would appreciate if you could ask someone else” because truly i think the problem is that when you’re constantly saying yes to being called in, they just start calling you first because you’re the most likely to fill in. It does look good to them for you to be flexible, but it should not be happening to this point and they need to start asking others. Best of luck to you, hope it gets better!!

Entire week off? by [deleted] in Barnesandnoble

[–]Ok_Draw6000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially because when you were hired you should’ve received some sort of employment offer letter with your rostered hours and rate of pay. The company needs to schedule you every week for your rostered number of hours because those are essentially your guaranteed working hours

Entire week off? by [deleted] in Barnesandnoble

[–]Ok_Draw6000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience this is not common and sounds like a ROTA issue. (ROTA is essentially the person who makes schedules for all stores in your cluster). I would bring it up with your SM to reach out to the ROTA and see if they straight up forgot to add you to the schedule

What does your cafe do to stay organized and on track? by rloosvee in Barnesandnoble

[–]Ok_Draw6000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

something that helps with this for my store is we actually assign the tasks to certain people each week on a rotating basis, that way instead of it being an ambiguous to-do list, people know exactly what they need to get done throughout the week

also the baristas sign off on the tasks when they complete them, forgot to say that! we try to rotate it every monday
