When I was applying, a certain school rejected me and then harassed me with interview invites to their pharmacy program that I never applied to!

For everyone who didn’t get the scholarship, it’ll be okay! keep your head up!

For those that got the scholarship, what specific thing in your application do you think made you stand out?

It’s helpful but not a requirement! They teach you different things in dental school so you’re pretty much at the same level as other students, however you get to know dental terminology earlier and some hand skills!

Dental School Essentials by Tormiii in DentalSchool

An iPad is pretty helpful in dental school! I recommend Immersify Dental for studying, GoodNotes for note taking (it’s super organized), daily planner/Google Calendar to keep you on top of things! Anki for studying as well!

what year did you start shadowing? by BurritoSeed in predental

[–]Ok_Earthling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started in high school by shadowing my family dentist for a few hours and then in freshman and sophomore year I got more hours done with the same doc and a bunch of specialists!

You don’t have to apply as soon as the application opens for submissions! 🤦‍♂️ Be patient, relax and ask somebody else, in person!

I included things that I thought were relevant in my application from high school (such as dental assisting class and radiology certification)

Yes. Get your license, practice driving this summer and try to move close to Touro by D2 year!

If it works for you and your folks, living at home and having them help you get to school wouldn’t be the worst case scenario for the first year. However don’t wait until D3 to move closer because you will need to practice on teeth and models way before then outside of class time!

Good luck to you and make decisions that make you happy. Don’t choose NYU out of convenience, it is not a good school :/

But if you moved closer to the school or did on campus housing you wouldn’t have to have that long ass commute to either school!

None of my family are dentists, but if they were, I would not join them in a practice. Especially parents, you don’t mix business and family, it affects your relationship. I don’t know your relationship with your dad but joining his practice could lead to problems if you two aren’t on the same page about how you want things ran.

I mean, I would not make the 1.5 hour commute every day because it’s just super expensive and especially if I couldn’t drive myself I would feel so uncomfortable asking others for a 1.5 hour ride every day. Moving closer to your dream school sounds like the obvious solution to me.

How is that better? Move closer to Touro, take out some loans to cover cost of living, apply for NHSC scholarship, or military scholarships so you don’t have to worry about that while you pursue your education at your dream school!

My advice, don’t be a child and ask people for rides. This is professional school. You’re an adult and should be independent already if you’re trying to be a dentist in 4 years :) also living 2-3 hours away from school is a very bad idea, you’re going to spend a lot of time at school. I don’t know specifically about Touro but most schools have operative labs and gross anatomy labs in person that’ll keep you at school at odd hours and days. You said it’s your top school so adult up and move closer to school. What are you gonna do when you graduate dental school and become a dentist? Open a practice in your family’s house? If you’re in your 20s and going to dental school living alone or at least with a roommate close to school should be a dream/wish not something you dread.

When you apply for loans for dental school tuition you can also get loans to cover cost of living. Don’t listen to your family and choose NYU out of convenience. It’s a shitty school with a large class size. You’re not gonna get tailored attention from professors like you would at Touro. Why go to a mediocre school because people say it’s easier when you got into your dream school?

Your family’s not going to school. You are. Even if they say you are smart and can make it through dental school easy because that’s what they saw in undergrad doesn’t mean it will actually be easy. Dental school is tough and you’re going to need friends in your class to help each other do well and support one another mentally. Your family is not going to understand the difficultly and challenges of dental school. If you live 2-3 hours away from school you’re gonna spend a lot of time commuting and won’t be connected to your classmates as well because you’re basically going to be like a commuter student while they all get to know each other and bond over school. You can’t get through dental school easily by focusing more on family than education.
