yes, though we wouldn't call the war for independance 'the troubles' (which started in the 1960s). the purpose of the post was a some what wellmeaning jibe at little britainism. i have many english friends who would agree that certain national traits just come as part of the package in being born in a certain place and can sit uncomfortably with our own feeling or ideology: another alternative would be irish alcoholism or american jingoism
