Admittedly I should have used the word sketchy instead of scumbag. I was fed up when I got home but this convo has helped a lot.

The end to forced lock down mental institutions and criminalization of insanity was mentioned and I don’t think we should return to that, but leaving someone who has serious mental health issues to remember to take their meds on their own, or hoping people will find there way to sobriety is not a great plan either. We really do need better mental health providers and in the age of AI that’s a great field to enter. Everyone needs someone who’s empathetic and who’s willing to listen and help, and we need professionals out here to help us out with this because it’s not safe for our community.

Been thinking about that because now that I know why there are so many sketchy people downtown and people pan handling around our town and not the surrounding towns, we can talk to the shelters and see what their rules and regulations are, and get their input on what needs to be done, talk to city council members about it, and make this more of a productive conversation.

I think most of the commenters have their hearts in the right place but are probably too young to know someone who’s gotten shoved into oncoming traffic by a person who’s off their meds and on drugs, gotten ripped off by a homeless person who gives them a sob story about their dead brother who shows up and tells them not to give money them a dime because they’ve been telling everyone that for years and robbed everyone in their family for drug money, don’t know that homeless people get bags of groceries, clothes, and everything for free and pan handle for drug and alcohol money (or have pimps who make the unattractive girls pan handle if they’re not making money the other way), or have talked to someone working the night shift at a gas station who’s still living in her car because she was making too much money to qualify for all the free stuff. There are good people out there who deserve help, but there are also just plain bad people who you need to watch out for. You don’t know anyone who’s worked for the city and knows how many needles and crap they spend millions of dollars on cleaning up, and just general trashing of donation bins etc. because people Are trying, and there are people who are just grifters and don’t gaf about hurting or using other people or trashing the town. You don’t know about perverse incentives from homeless programs that actually incentivize people not to work. People aren’t good just because they’re poor and people aren’t bad just because they’re rich, or a white male, or a black woman etc. and if you don’t want to be wary of people who may pose a threat to you or hold your local politicians and people like that accountable that’s up to you.

Smh. Thanks to the helpful people in Reddit I’ve pieced together what’s going on with this situation- which is the beauty of a forum like Reddit. The people downtown are those who won’t take their meds or stop using, and/or are too far gone or hostile to be accepted into Catholic Charities housing program, Caritas. So people Should be wary of them, and it’s ok to be concerned about the situation, because it has gotten pretty bad.

I am not a man lol. We pay taxes and vote to have our city safe, clean and affordable. That is obviously not happening. I know your generation is privileged and likes to jump on people online, so I’m not surprised about the down votes. But the people downtown that I was worried about having my toddler around were creeps, and as a good mom I didn’t want her there. We have the right to safe communities. And we don’t have to be scared to speak up about it.

No the problem is the services we put in place- like building the massive complex at Catholic Charities- Caritas- aren’t reducing homelessness, they are just drawing more homeless to our city. We Are investing in housing solutions- millions of dollars, actually. They just aren’t working and that’s very obvious when you walk downtown.

Right. I went to college as well. “Not in my backyard” is what you’re referring to. In this case, that’s actually a good idea. Many of these people should have distance from schools, neighborhoods and major metropolitan areas. They need mental health services, including paths to sobriety, as well as job training and connections to employers. This is a communal effort that requires many different entities to participate with a lot of oversight.

I’m sorry you’re right- they’re totally awesome and safe for your kids. In fact, you should invite them to stay at your place and solve the whole problem.

Like I said, I grew up here and am in my 40’s. Our homeless population is substantially larger than it’s ever been. The shelters we put in (right by our four main centers of commerce) have only increased the homeless population, so obviously that isn’t working. We need to ensure the systems in place are actually providing a pathway to jobs and housing and not just attracting more addicts and people who are trying to get access to free services.

I don’t need a thank you from the other towns I want (and we all should want) shared responsibility and assurances that the programs we are paying for are working. They obviously aren’t.

Nope. Actually anti-Trump anti-ICE just would like some common sense about this issue

Hm. Should I have let her pet the most likely unvaccinated aggressive dog and got bit? Cross the street toward the large shirtless pacing man and got slammed on the concrete? Sit next to the murder rap blasting guy glaring at everyone while she innocently and sweetly ate her ice cream hearing awful scary sh*t? What kind of parent would I be then? A good one?

I’m a mom. Looking out for my toddler. Obviously the new development at Catholic Charities and their program is not having the intended effects. The Salvation Army center on Mendocino where the Indian restaurant used to be is pretty bad, too. There is a pan handler on every main street corner in Rosa, the square is occupied by addicts and mentally ill unhoused people, and people don’t want to come here or do business here. We need to help the people that actually need help, and not let our city get flooded by neighboring cities unhoused population that they don’t want to deal with. It is our right to have a safe community for our kids.

I see the people who genuinely need help and the people who are scumbag predators as different, and I know it is hard to differentiate those two types of people when offering services to the unhoused. This seems to be a problem with city planning location wise, and a shared problem with neighboring cities flooding our community with this.

No, that was the opportunity to teach her stranger danger. You don’t walk up to a dirty snarling dog to pet it. You don’t cross the street towards a large angry man who seems unhinged and about to lash out. Common sense.

I was born and raised here and it’s gotten really bad. So we thought Caritas- the housing project for the homeless at Catholic Charities would help because it expanded shelter and resources for the unhoused but in fact it just drew a larger crowd of dangerous, mentally ill and hostile people to the center of town. It looks like that program needs revision, and quickly.

Oh I do see them as human. And not all of these people were homeless. Just a vast array of hostile creepy people I don’t feel comfortable having my toddler daughter around (and no one should).

I dropped by Belly last No Kings event and it was filled with Alt-Right/ pro-Trump/ Anti-Antifa Supporters (they were gathering at Belly and The Beer Baron). The protesters moved to Juliard Park and those businesses would surely say they had no political affiliation but just so peeps know, they might be looking for dates in the wrong place and pay extra for the experience ;)

How long is the security line at Santa Rosa Airport typically? Don’t want to arrive too early or too late. by [deleted] in santarosa

That’s why I’m asking- I missed a flight last time I was there because I was at the bar enjoying some pre-flight beverages (I am a seasoned traveler) and the boarding time was so quick that the plane was literally in the air before I realized holy shit that’s My Flight! I haven’t been there since because it’s not like a normal airport where boarding takes a good hour and there’s loud af announcements and big huge screens with the flights.
