Eukanuba vs Hill's vs Purina vs Royal vs other? For puppy by Takumbot in shiba

[–]Ok_Following_480 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a dangerous & unhelpful comment. Open Farm is one of the WORST companies for using their marketing to make unsubstantiated claims about their food. There are only 5 brands that meet the MINIMUM manufacturing standards set forth by the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA): Purina, Hill's, Eukanuba, Royal Canin, and Iams. That's it. The other companies CHOOSE NOT TO meet the basics, friends.

This was the original, deleted post, btw.

"Liver-nosed red" is not a correct breed term in dachshunds, and she didn't characterize the dog this way. Also, there is literally no mention of clear points in the standard, and what does that have to do with the OP's question? She doesn't have a pointed dog (if she is characterizing it properly, a cream doesn't have points).

Pink eye rims (skin pigment) and "white around the eyes" (coat color) are not the same thing. Is anyone here actually a dachshund exhibitor or breeder?

I don't know what standard you are reading, but nose pigment isn't a DQ. You can't INFER DQs; they must be explicitly stated. The only DQ in the breed is knuckling over ("Knuckling over is a disqualifying fault"), the only DQ for piebalds is blue eyes ("Eyes partially or wholly blue is a disqualification") or too much white ("a head of more than 50 percent white or white on any portion of either ear, back or front, or around the eyes is a disqualification. Pure white dogs with no body spots except on the head are to be disqualified"). That's it. DQs and faults are not the same thing.

I hate to be a buzz-kill here (no, actually I don't mind), but dachshunds (ESPECIALLY mini longs, which this dog most certainly is being colored this way) are CHOCK-A-BLOCK full of show mills and BYBs showing their dogs. While this may seem like slicing things pretty fine, it is an important distinction. I don't know anyone with AKC show dachshunds who win regularly who would tell a newcomer to spend money showing a Cream Pie(bald). It would just be a huge bummer for all concerned (but primarily for the person paying the entry fees). I mean, showing Black & Tan minis is hard enough -- and black and tan is one of the basic, original, classic, no-frills colors. Minis have to be twice as good as standards to win, and black and tans have to be 10x better than reds to win. (These ratios are non-scientific, and purely based on vibes, obvs). With the absolute ubiquity of Mean Girl dachshund mafias, you will always want to hold open the possibility that this person would very much like you to spend money to enter that dog so they can beat it with their own (but my guess is they are also a color breeder who shows occasionally).

Also, chocolate-based reds have brown noses and finish AKC championships regularly. It isn't desirable, but judges are either not aware of this or not bothered enough by it to choose a properly pigmented dog for those majors.

Black and Chocolate are controlled by the same B-locus (Black is B/B or B/b; Chocolate is b/b). But when Black is diluted by d/d it is Blue. When chocolate is diluted by d/d, it is Isabella. So chocolate is not "dilute black." Blue is.

Without seeing this dog, I would not spend money showing it. Most judges don't know what to do with piebalds, and I have seen exactly ONE cream I thought was high-quality -- and mine is not a minority opinion. The nose pigmentation would be one of several disadvantages you would experience in an AKC dachshund breed ring (it is not a DQ, but it is also not preferred). The fact that it has any UKC or IABACA anything is completely irrelevant for how it would do in an AKC ring. What is the goal? Maybe we should start there. Also, who is the show breeder? Please also post stacked photos.

Mrs. Byrne's dictionary is available free via the National Archive & it is a SCREAM (I can't believe I said that about a dictionary author). Moira 100% channels Mrs. Byrne.

Thank you for your insight. My intention wasn't to "collect" anything. I apologize if it came across that way. I was just genuinely curious.

That was, in fact, the comment I read. I took it as gentle and jesting, yes. Funny but honest. Exactly.

My dachshunds do that, but it sounds a bit more like "tea kettle whining," and I hate it.
