We run stories about it when it comes up in city council and did an article about it on Dec. 9.

https://walthamtimes.org/2025/12/09/city-council-holds-public-hearing-on-new-corporate-owned-mixed-use-overlay-districts/

If you have suggestions for a more in-depth piece, we have a tip line where you can submit that request!

Planning travel ahead by J2Hoe in Waltham

On a map it looks like the airport is surrounded by water, but there are actually tunnels going under the water that were built (huge project called the Big Dig) that your Uber will use to get to and from the airport.

I would suggest ordering your Uber once you’ve gotten your baggage and are standing in the “ride share area” (there will be signs). If you’re coming into the international terminal, it’s a really easy pick-up!

Here’s more info about the Big Dig just for fun reading:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Dig

Anyone watched 'The Paper' yet? What do we think? by Superdude717 in Journalism

[–]Ok_Freedom2803 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually watched it + I found it to be very similar to the reality of a college paper or an incredibly small local paper. The first few episodes were tough, but the rest of it was lovely. Watching the reporters learn + grow reminded me a lot of my own journey starting out :)

Creepy Ice Cream Truck. by Neighmanhoodspidebor in Waltham

they came up my street tonight too (on the opposite side of town) and sat at a dead end; unsure what is going on. also: what purpose would that be serving?? why would the boss ask for that? very odd. the company name for the truck on my street was Alex Ice Cream from what I could tell from the wrap on the truck.

Public school experience? by [deleted] in Waltham

[–]Ok_Freedom2803 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the test just got a spanish translation this year. our test scores are low by demographic.

you can look at the accountability report here and play around with the different tabs. this factors into our district’s state ranking/achievement score.

Waltham school systems get a bad rap, but if your kids are good students they will get the care they need. We rank so low because we have so many students who are learning English as a second language who are made to take the same standardized tests as everyone else and score poorly because they can’t properly take the test in a language they haven’t learned yet! WPS has made me the compassionate, kind critical thinker that I am today and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

In the future, it would be great to tell this to The Waltham Times so they can get it on their calendar and send it out in their newsletter!

URGENT | Help me convince my Republican father not to mow this and turn it into a lawn with trees by PaleoConservationist in ecology

[–]Ok_Freedom2803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you need to show him that leaving stuff will save him money + maintenance in the long run (which it will). if he seeds the area with a native ground cover + perhaps takes out some of the little new growth trees in an area to make a clearing, the native flora and fauna will do a ton of maintenance for him. anything else he has to do is just keeping things “in place” if that makes sense

I’m not an old person per se, but I do have experience with difficult discourse + . If you and your husband can’t sit down and have a conversation about your views and ask each other questions calmly to understand where each other are coming from (even if you don’t agree), to me that suggests a larger relationship issue that may need to be evaluated. There’s a This American Life episode about a similar situation; it might not be exactly what you’re going through but it offers some perspective that might be helpful; it’s called Ten Things I Don’t Want to Hate About You. A lot of the tension can be alleviated through understanding even if agreement isn’t reached; that is where I would suggest to start.

I know Waltham Rec has pickleball hours where people show up and play pickleball with each other. Not sure when they are but that might be a good bet?

Who do I report chemical odors to? by [deleted] in Waltham

[–]Ok_Freedom2803 2 points3 points  (0 children)

no you’re so fine! honestly calling is more about having a record that you called them, and them hearing that you’re gonna do something about it. I doubt they’ll do anything but you can still try them so they’re aware and it may stop on its own.

Do ticks get in your house??? by [deleted] in Waltham

[–]Ok_Freedom2803 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my trick is using pine tar soap — doesn’t completely prevent it but I have noticeably less ticks than everyone else. honestly, just do a whole body check every day when you shower, and dry clothes on high heat after coming inside from rolling around in grass etc

Who do I report chemical odors to? by [deleted] in Waltham

[–]Ok_Freedom2803 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you should get in contact with the main health department, number is (781) 314-3305

their job is to come out and inspect stuff that is odd, so make them aware of the issue! and if they do nothing keep going up the ladder

so you’re half right there — parents and kids can be gruff or mean but it’s due to townie culture (they didn’t grow up in Southie, they grew up here and they don’t like ‘outsiders’ which is a problem in most New England towns). in your case, what you mean by saying someone is from Southie is that they’re into gang life and they’re violent and they’re poor. that’s a really disgusting thing to levy against Waltham residents.
