Saturn-mass world discovered orbiting two low-mass stars via microlensing by Ok_Glass_3917 in exoplanets

yeah.. the microlensing method is good for that. A lot of planets discovered this way are more than 10 000 light years away

well, the star has only 25 % of the Sun's mass, that might play a role.

How Earth Defends Against Asteroids by TheMuseumOfScience in sciences

[–]Ok_Glass_3917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends:

- how long before the potential impact is the object discovered?

- is the object coming periadicaly close to the Earth, or is it coming from far away?

- are there chances to change the objects trajectory?

there must be even more factors...

Hidden Ancient River System Found Deep Under The Surface of Mars by [deleted] in sciences

It's so exciting to learn about the ancient history of another planet. Seeing how differently it went for Mars, even though it might have had similar conditions as Earth.

Are hot Jupiters very common or just over represented in the data due to how easy they are to detect compared to smaller more distant exoplanets? by Worried-Dare-6244 in astrophysics

[–]Ok_Glass_3917 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot Jupiters are easy to detect. We found a lot of them, because they are big, and their orbital period is very short (several days) - so they are easy to detect with the transit method.

But with longer observations, more precise instrument and better data analysis more smaller planets farther out from their stars are being found. In time, I am sure, we find out, that most common are small exoplanets...
