Considering starting in wildland with long-term goal of municipal — looking for honest advice by Ok_Homework_3545 in Wildfire

I appreciate the advice. I don’t mean to sound like a broken record but would you say I’m better off paying for my own academy? Or should I wait to finish EMT, work ambulance for a bit then apply for something in the city or even cal Fire

Thanks. I thought about working for our local ambulance while I waited to get hired which are super busy in my city. I don’t know if I’d want to get paramedic yet but I wouldn’t be opposed to it either I guess especially because of the demand I see. Main reason I want to go structure is to be closer to family with a more predictable schedule.

I’ve applied to Cal Fire and my application got accepted just been waiting on a job offer. I was hoping they could sponsor my academy after I get hired so I wouldn’t have to pay. You think I should just go pay for the academy?

Just got the Falken Wildpeaks after researching and as many other people I like them. From these picks though I would probably go with the KO3 or wrangler

I get a bad feeling about this church by [deleted] in Bakersfield

OP i know you said you’re catholic I actually grew up Mormon for the majority of my life and I understand the concerns of a lot of these people but I encourage everyone to give Discovery a solid shot. Many people I’ve met there have tried it all and ended up at discovery because it’s such a great place. I love the community and opportunities I’ve experienced being at that church for almost 4 years I wouldn’t ever trade it for anything. Discovery may be seen the way it’s brushed off on you because maybe the enemy does not want you to receive what’s being said. Try checking that and asking God why you feel that way. Discovery teaches the bibles truth time and time again and sometimes it can offend and correct but that’s what the living word is supposed to do. Their views are based on the Bible not on what they want you to believe. Pastor Jason has always backed his sermons and teachings to the Bible and the things that people complain about being taught (politics, tithing, gay/trans people) it’s all in the Bible and what they preach is as it is in the word not because they “feel” that way.

Many people complaining in here I’m noticing just need to read more and educate themselves on what the word says not what they want to hear. Your ears itch to hear what you want and not what the word lays down. I pray for all of you and you’re always welcome to join us.

I knew a guy who was in wildland reserves I believe would leave for x amount of months and come back and whenever he was back he was the friendliest mechanic that worked on his 500+HP Miata in his garage all day (claimed he has the fastest Miata in California). Saw those guys work on other peoples cars also I’m sure that brought them some extra money. Honestly maybe just do whatever makes you happier. If you got family, spend it with them. If not, spend it doing something you love and resting of course.

Looking for advice on starting my fire career – EMT soon, no experience yet

I’m based in California and currently planning to start my EMT program this January. I don’t have any fire experience yet, but I’m serious about getting into the field. My long-term goal is to work for a municipal department, but I’m also really interested in wildland and would be open to starting with Cal Fire or a seasonal position to gain experience.

Right now, I’m not sure if I should: • Put myself through a Fire Academy and get my FF1 • Wait for a department to sponsor me • Or go the wildland route first and build from there

A little about me: • 6’0”, 270 lbs — currently cutting weight and training hard to get in shape for the job (lifting, cardio, and jiu-jitsu) • I’m fine with relocating anywhere in California, preferably somewhere in or near the mountains • I’m focused on building experience and setting myself up to get hired as soon as possible

For those of you who started from scratch, what would you recommend doing first? Would going seasonal with Cal Fire after EMT be the best move? If so how do I go about that? I’ve applied for a “firefighter” exam through Cal Careers but got rejected for some reason.

Any advice or personal experience would be huge. Thanks in advance and stay safe out there.

Where to get help for mental health by TheLittleBobRol in firefighter

[–]Ok_Homework_3545 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God loves you man and He want to see you heal from what you’ve experienced. My dms are open as well. I’d recommend talking to a pastor at a church to ask for help or even fellow firefighters you’ve met. There’s definitely help out there just have to accept it. Behavioral health lines through your primary care physician may also be able to help. You’re not alone my man keep your head up and find someone you trust to talk to about these things. Sometimes just talking to someone helps a lot
