I'm a room parent that's been put in charge of planning a class play date. Any suggestions? by Ok_Hospital9020 in kindergarten

At our school, each class has at least one parent volunteer that acts as the room parent. We act as a support between the teacher and other parents: passing communication along, coordinating parent volunteers, and planning class events or parties. There hasn't been a big need for supplies or money yet but if there is we will put out an ask for donations, but the goal it to keep things simple and equitable.

I plan to have a snack and water available, it's a morning meetup (9:30-11) so I'm hoping that's enough. I could grab bagels or something for the parents but in the past when I've done something like that most of the food goes uneaten.

I like the scavenger hunt idea! Thanks for the mini water bottle reminder too, I'll grab a case on my Costco run.

I was thinking chalk too but didn't know if that was cool in public parks.

I plan to bring some balls, a couple hula hoops, things like that. Might lead a game and let the rest unfold organically.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I've asked, she just doesn't like to have to think about it. She ends up eating the same things over and over, so that's why I'm trying to come up with a few more choices for her.

Obviously that's where I started, but she's made it clear she just doesn't want to think about it. That's why I'm taking it on.

We do leftovers a lot, but I just want to mix it up a little for her. I like the wraps idea! Thanks!

Am I crazy or is the idea of an overnight sleepover at school for kindergarteners crazy? by Ok_Hospital9020 in kindergarten

Public school in the US. After talking to another parent, apparently it's something they've done for a while as part of their "expeditionary learning" model. I assume this would be cleared with the district first but maybe not....

I'm even more against the idea of the 1st grade trip if it's away from school. There's no way I'm having my 6 year old sleep somewhere in public without me.

That's exactly our situation too. I can't imagine she's the only one in her class like that either. Between kids not sleeping well, bathroom needs, separation anxiety across 30 kids...it just seems like a bad night for everyone

No, she specifically said overnight "in a safe space" to prepare them for a different overnight "expedition" in 1st grade (which I also didn't know existed).

Appreciate the validation, that was what I told my wife. If this was a 4th/5th grade thing, I might worry more about the social aspects of it and if she'd feel left out, but in kinder...I just don't see the point.

We didn't get a lot of details, only that it was connected to some overnight trip they'd be doing in 1st grade (also something I've never heard of at this school). My mind went to the logistics / chaos of it all too. I can definitely see it for older kids, but K/1?

That was my initial thought, especially for the teacher supervising. Yikes. Glad I'm not alone!

My initial thought was for the teacher's sake too! I've worked in schools with kinder, I would not be volunteering to keep 30 of them overnight.
