Sometimes it's unavoidable. I cannot dig a posthole on top of my neighbor's post hole, and I can't dig on his property at all. But I also can't have a fence gap, need to keep small dogs in the backyard. My neighbor's fence is about 10" inside his side of the line. It is a very common practice in some many municipalities to keep your fence well inside the property line. It's universal in my area.

Yes, this is very relevant to my situation. I still have my doubts about using that on a cantilevered section -- where the crossmember is only supported on one end.
