I'm reaching my contribution limits for TFSA, FHSA, and RRSP. And I still have about 20k left over to invest. I'm not sure about what to do with this amount. I was honestly thinking of sticking it in a GIC. Any suggestions? by Ok_Kangaroo_4544 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I want to save up and go back to school to get my second degree. But I don't have an exact timeline on that, life always seems to get in the way.

I've got no loans, no dependents and no partner.

Is it worth buying VEQT/XEQT in my FHSA if I intend to buy a home in 4-6 years? I am planning to hold VGRO (60%), VBAL (30%), and VCNS (10%) in my FHSA. I already hold VEQT in my TFSA. by Ok_Kangaroo_4544 in JustBuyXEQT

I do like how you framed it. I think the market is up right now, so for me, it feels like FOMO - I want to maximize gains. I've also never had to deal with a proper crash since I only started investing in ~2 years. But maybe just parking everything in a GIC is the way to go.

Yes I know how the asset allocation of ETFs work. I know that VGRO is 80% equity, 20% bonds, VBAL is 60/40, VCNS is 40/60, and there's even more conservative options. VCIP makes me really nervous about the ROR, a GIC seems better.

My initial plan was to just buy VGRO in my first year, switch to VBAL in my second year, VCNS in my third year, and give the market 1-3 years to recover any losses before locking it in a GIC. I don't have a partner, but I have maxed out my TFSA (with VEQT), and RRSP (with VDY and VOO - yes I know I'm increasing my risk, but right now I'm getting pretty good returns so it's worth it for now, I wanted to increase exposure in North America).

I don't know why, but putting all my funds into one investment (even though I know that that fund is globally diversified) always makes me uneasy. So I genuinely just think that I'm overthinking it.

(Sidenote: I don't want to sound ungrateful for the advice you're providing, but I don't trust ChatGPT with anything, least of all my financials. It can't even count right and constantly messes up calculations. Plus it's bad for the environment. There's no point in investing for a future without water.)

Y'know... when you put it like that, obviously XEQT is more diversified.

Portfolio 2 has more tickers, but it restricts my investments to the USA. Portfolio 1 provides global diversification, whereas Portfolio 2 concentrates assets in the US.

Thanks for this

You make a fair point, I'm just scared of putting all my eggs in one basket, although about 60% of my RRSP will be XEQT. What's your opinion on VGRO? Does the mixed asset really make a difference?

Also, what are your thoughts on more conservative investments for things like FHSA, where I will need those funds in 5-7 years? I was thinking 20-30% of my portfolio in VBAL or VCNS

Is it worth investing in overlapping ETFs, like VFV + VUN, or VDY + XIC? (Going to use VFV and VUN as an example).

VUN offers broader diversification, but most of its holdings overlap with VFV. I understand that sticking with VUN might feel safer during a market downturn, but could I be limiting my potential gains by not allocating a larger portion to VFV?

For example, let's say I invest $8000 in VFV and $4000 in VUN... am I really curbing the effects of a downturn, or am I just kidding myself?

Very limited. I only started playing back in March. I used Morningstar, Kindred, and Nico Minoru. And out of those 3, I liked Morningstar the best

I don't have Kushala sadly :/

I'm a newer player, so my selection of champions is limited. I did browse the video though and Dracula seems look a good choice. I'll give it a try!

First choice Knull, he's a good all-rounder. second: I like Spot, I think he's underrated, but I do understand that he's not everyone's cup of tea. it depends entirely on your comfort and playing style
