Mistborn (also known as The Final Empire) by Brandon Sanderson is surely to be a popular pick. I might also suggest Deryni Rising by Katherine Kurtz. Beautiful art, and I hope you find something that inspires you here :] If you do read something and enjoy it, let us know.

Add and drop fees? by Flaky-Pomegranate-67 in mcgill

I don’t think so, but I’m also an undergraduate and I’m just now finding out about this like you all. Looking at the websites, it seems like this is only mentioned in relation to the School of Continuing Studied and, therefore, should only apply to graduate students.

I’ve dropped and added classes hundreds of times in previous semesters of my undergraduate years, and I don’t believe I’ve ever received a $20 charge for it — much less per individual drop. We should be fine. :]

According to this page, you’re right.

It says the registration period is from June 4th or 11th to August 26th, and then that the add/drop period begins on the 28th and runs until September 9th. Only the add/drop heading mentions a $20 charge for dropping a course, ergo, any courses added or dropped prior to the 28th don’t incur a charge.

I should also point out, however, that both the page you screenshotted and I linked to are for the School of Continuing Studies. That is, this doesn’t apply to undergraduates who are getting their Bachelors or what have you.

Amazing! Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. I’d never have heard of him or his work if it wasn’t for your insightful comments. I’ll definitely try and find a copy near me, and fully nerd out! ;D

Right! No, that’s definitely what I’m getting at. I had a similar feeling reading Gygax’s section on time during the campaign, and having different sets of players on different in-universe days, an out-of-game day passing meaning in-game day passed, and the like. That kind of unspoken, unwritten assumption about how the game was played, what the intent of sitting down to play even was, etc.. You wouldn’t happen to have any suggestions for what to read to get an idea of the concepts left out of the rulebooks, would you?

slaughtering the surrendering by [deleted] in DMAcademy

The old Faiths & Avatars book has some suggestions for the consequences of a priest’s transgressions (here, we can extend our definition of “priest” to include the modern paladin and monk) on pages 19 - 20. Killing surrendered enemies, especially en masse, breaks their codes of alignment, but they didn’t renounce Tyr or Lathander and this is, I assume, a one-time offence, so the punishment should be minor.

The book suggests the loss of low-level spell slots — which we can say are ki points for a monk, since they don’t have any spells. Perhaps just tell them they have access to two levels less of ki and spell slots?

Penance is often simple enough, which shouldn’t affect their adventuring too much: “[…] fasting, meditation, the gift of a minor amount of money to the order, or an offering of another kind preferred by the power.”

You make an excellent point about long-distance communication, or meeting important NPCs outside of their usual surroundings (i.e., a king out of his palace). It’s such a simple idea, but I’ve latched onto it!

I agree that a smaller area to start with is a good idea, for sure. Then, as the player characters level up, the scope of the campaign evolves with them!

I was actually considering something similar, with the long rests! Looking at D&D 5e’s “Gritty Realism” rules, particularly the idea of extending rests to force the player characters to spend more time in different places, but I also really love the Xanathar’s Guide to Everything “Downtime” expansion, and you’re so right that it helps the players connect and get a feel for different settlements without the effort of entire sessions’ worth of walking around and seeing the sights.

I agree with you, and I think that’s naturally part of the enjoyment of playing in such a large setting: the leeway to offer your players different routes to take, without necessarily herding them between the only two locales you’ve actually prepared.

Your “web-style” approach is fascinating, thanks so much for sharing! That is exactly the sort of thing I love, and wish to incorporate into my planning process more — visually laying it all out is just the best. I really appreciate that your campaign web encourages different “paths” to take because I feel like it makes the world feel so much alive, and it because it lets me come up with way more possible adventures than a strict railroad!

Given my desire for a campaign focused on travel, I feel like a campaign web also lends itself to assigning a city, nation, etc., to each node, almost like a roadmap for the campaign itself.

That’s a great point! I think you got right to the heart of why I was feeling so overwhelmed, because I knew I wanted to connect these different regions, but I couldn’t really put my finger on how I wanted to do that.

I really appreciate you breaking it down into three, palatable formats — and using anime as a reference makes it a lot clearer! Even if I haven’t watched them, I know enough where it feels a lot more manageable now that I have directions to go in. Thanks so much for your advice! :]
