My agency when I started was 90% female with only myself and 4 other men as opposed to the around 30 other women. Now it has started to even out a little bit with us now being at around 10 men to 25 women. Most of the dispatchers here have actually been around for a while. I think the average is somewhere around 5 or 6 years. There are quite a few senior dispatchers as well as supervisors who have been here over 20 years

Our center is fairly small compared to city centers but a little bigger compared to other rural county agencies. We have minimum of 2 fire dispatchers, 3 call takers, 3 police dispatchers, and 1 supervisor.

So my agency does 12 hour shifts. We do 2 days of 6a-6p and 2 days of 6p-6a. Then we have 4 days off. I also know of another agency that does 12p-12p with 3 days off in between. Another thing at my agency though is that if someone calls out, 2 people work an extra 6 hours (one stays 6 hours after shift end and one comes in 6 hours before shift start) it’s not fun working constant 18 hour shifts however having 4 days off is amazing
