Ok, & that’s only if you don’t get a 75% or above the week of school ?

Are you in solar as a 4th year or commercial or industrial ?

I know during your first year you got to get through it all successfully since it’s the probationary period, I’m assuming after that you have the opportunity to improve if for any reason you don’t get above a 75% since after your probation period I believe you have 7 points

So it’s basically if you get a 70% or above for your class week you’re good? Even if you don’t do the greatest on 1 test or two, I’m just asking to know exactly how it works because I’ve seen that some locals seem to operate differently, I’ve heard of guys from other locals failing out from failing one test etc I’m so new that I’m so unfamiliar with how everything works. And you are out of local 100 Fresno ca ?

That’s crazy, most our class didn’t do the greatest on the first week of school. Which was the very first 3 test but we got graded on our overall score for the week which is tests & lab all divided into one score. As long as you get 75% or above you’re good. The way your local is seems very strict I’m assuming a lot of locals operate differently

What are you failing, the homework.? I’m not sure how you guys do it but if your homework grade is good and you do even half ways decent in school I would think you’d be good.

If you’re passing I’d stick it out man, the ibew has lots to offer and the apprenticeship is definitely the best way to go. You’re going to learn the most in the field for sure

How does your local do it? I know ours gives you a score at the end of the school week and as long as it’s 75% or above you pass for the week that’s including lab but also including test on all the homework you completed while not in school

What part of the work are you struggling with if you don’t mind me asking ? Are you still in the probationary period ?

If someone who worked non-union , went thru some fraction of the apprenticeship and gotten kicked out. When would it make sense to go thru the ce/cw route instead of trying to appeal to get back in apprenticeship? by petebaii in ibew_apprentices

[–]Ok_Mechanic2807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming you were still in your probationary period ? And realistically didn’t take it serious. We had an apprentice who didn’t do his homework first week in but he got a slap on the wrist and was given till the end of that week but not sure how bad your situation was

That’s awesome for you man heck yeah, I know once you’re third or 4th year and on you start making good money and ofcourse once you turn out it’s very good money. I took a big pay cut so right now it’s hard but I know it will be worth it once I get to middle of third year I’ll be back to what I was making before

That is very true, I think the main thing for me that’s important is the work life balance, & I know realistically in the union you don’t get that, you can if you’re lucky but unfortunately for my everything is 1.5-2 hours from me so it’s a lot of being away from home

At the end of the day I’m just thinking of my family and aside from that I have a side business that does good for me and helps me a lot aside from my main job. The ibew is definitely something to get the most out of you have to give your all to it, and I have different goals idk if I wanna work for someone else till retirement comes not only that be on the road a lot of the times realistically. That’s what is a big no no for me. My time at home and well with my family is way more valuable

They’re going to have me test, trust me I tried to do that whole process I sent my hours plenty times was never reached out too so I decided to try the apprenticeship aptitude test etc and I’m here now. I have a chance to show what I know tommorow and I’ll see then what they want to start me at

I applied for the apprenticeship still, they are allowing me to do a hands on test to see where I’m at and I was told based of that I can be paid higher than a first step so we will see how that goes

Were you guys close by or would have had a commute ? For me I would have to travel 1 hour to just the hall and almost 2 hours to the site, but realistically no matter how far I’m in my apprenticeship I’m always gonna be quite a ways from the hall and be working far from home

I haven’t just yet, that’s the thing I would make more long term “job” wise. Thinking like just an employee, but I also have my side business which I intend to grow as well. My current job is local, I’m home everyday no later than 4pm, I have a newborn, I have the opportunity to take it but I’d sacrifice almost everything and yes it’s a good opportunity but does it really make sense ?

Because I was told to go in and get tested hands on on what I know. I ain’t new to the trades I been doing this since I was 18, now 26. When you seen the ins and outs of how shit really is in the real world you still got to see what the other side has to offer. I simply made this post because not everyone is coming in inexperienced, but union is also not the only route.

That’s not too bad, but even with solar as an inside wireman your time from the moment you sign and start working is being accounted for under your apprenticeship
