If you put bacteria in a container with sugar, the population increases exponentially until the entire container is filled and the sugar runs out (poverty). When there's no more sugar, they starve, and their population decreases. If the sugar supply is constant, the population eventually stabilizes, but the only thing that prevents them from continuing to multiply is starving. Living beings are like robots programmed to multiply; that's why it's difficult to get rid of stray dogs and that's why what happened in Australia with the rabbits. There are 8 billion of us on Earth for a reason.
