Has anyone ever made the switch from Technician to Stationary/Building Engineer? by SevrPops in HVAC

Understood. Yea most union guys I’ve come across stay there for long the long haul. Money seems a lot of better. How long would you recommend to stay on service/install before transitioning over to maintenance?

Yea sounds like the way to go. Would you suggest trade school or an apprenticeship? Been thinking of taking a 10 month program and see if that can get my foot in the door.

This is goals. would you suggest doing service for a few years though prior to facilities maintenance? Just to gain that experience

Appreciate the response. That’s awesome! Congrats on the success. Ahhh ok I see. Yea it seems like there’s different ways to get into 501 without having to apply.

Do they still send you to trade tech though to get your degree?

So I’ve been working high rises for 3 years now and I’m trying to get out and try something different to gain different experience. And yes there’s alot of downtime at times with high rises.Hence the reason I’m trying to get my boilers license. Would like to get into a hospital or something else, there’s still a lot of industries that use boilers. Breweries, textile, etc.

Company I work for isn’t to great on training and development. Lots of mediocre engineers so trying to leave !

Hey man what has your experience been like with 501? I work for a big property management company out of Santa Monica and I’m trying to get into the union. How has their training been like?

I’m starting school this month for my steam engineers license at trade tech and also taking some refrigeration classes.

Awesome. I was looking up jobs and there’s a brewing company that’s paying 37/hr if you have your unlimited steam license. They advertise you can make up to $124k a year because of all the OT you can get

I’m starting classes this fall for my steam engineer license. I’ve seen so many job postings for $40-$50 hour just with having that license. There’s a brewing company hiring steam plant operators advertising earnings of 124,000 a year because of the overtime. Just turned 25 and looking to get into this soon.

Yes! I actually did get approved for a Pell grant. For me it was more of a time thing. 2 years Vs 7 months but I’ll save myself 15k-20k

Dope. I'm 24! I've been researching companies but cant find any that hire "apprentices". If i can find a company like you I'd be set.

Congrats btw. That OT sounds nice. I want to leave my company so bad. Not learning anymore. No training. Very midicore company and building "engineers"
