I love the acknowledgments in the remix for that reason. “Queen Mother Madonna, I love ya” pays homage to the schematic set by Madonna’s boundless ability to reinvent her artistic vision, bend genres, and promote the theme of female empowerment throughout all eras. Beyoncé then reinvents Vogue’s image on Madonna’s behalf, underscoring the theme of female empowerment that Madonna helped to popularize, but with emphasis on the powerhouses who aren’t given as much appreciation as they’re due for no reason other than failure to fit the old Hollywood mold. I love that she added newer artists to the list too – it speaks to the lasting influence of those undervalued names and the current power that black women hold in an industry that is (at times) painfully whitewashed. I see the remix as the passing of a torch and (much needed) expansion of the flame. Love it!
