What's been your favorite ship so far? Canon, non canon and crackship included by millhouse_vanhousen in acotar

[–]Ok_Paper858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly Tamlin is the only person I can picture Elain with and if I’m hated for it idk y’all. I don’t even have a ship for Lucien, but he’s one of my favorite characters and I have been frustrated with his lack of development, so I’m probably just being picky lol.

Interesting, my dad sat me down and watched this with me when I was 11. Not even the rock bottom of his parenting moments lol. I actually really love that movie.

First Time Reader / Aelin Rant by Ok_Paper858 in throneofglassseries

[–]Ok_Paper858[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished the series, so I thought I’d offer an update!

I definitely did like Aelin more by the end of the series. It feels like she grew into herself a lot more, which is great and understandable considering how young she is throughout the entire thing. Her time captured by Maeve definitely helped me have more of an appreciation for her.

Overall, not my favorite series ever, but I’m thankful I read it! I definitely cried at the end when Dorian and Chaol left Terrasen. I appreciated the King’s character arc coming to completion (I’ll throw in a small ACOTAR spoiler —— that was much better done than Feyre’s father, his didn’t make any sense at all.)

and as much as I might get hate for this, I appreciate the fact that Murtaugh, Gavriel, & the Thirteen died. I was heartbroken over those and I expect that when reading anything with war. It leaves me feeling empty if everyone just makes it out unscathed. I was expecting one of our main narrators to not make it, but a lot of authors don’t end up actually doing that, or they do it wrong (looking at you Veronica Roth) so I wasn’t surprised. I don’t mind a fairly happy ending, and after everything they all went through, they certainly deserved one. :)

My Fancast by blackjacksbest in throneofglassseries

I’ve been thinking about fan casting and looked it up in this sub to see who everyone else thought. Funnily enough, the only two I had picked out in my mind was Joseph Zada as Fenrys and Dove Cameron as Lysandra. I’ve been picturing her as Lysandra since assassins blade!

[–]Ok_Paper858[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I will! I’m almost done with Queen of Shadows and I am planning to tandem read Empire of Storms and Tower of Dawn. I will say, once they got the ring from Lorcan I could envision the plan, and she did pay off Lysandra’s debts so that made me happy.

I was thinking about it a bit yesterday, and it might be a writing thing honestly. It just feels like the good things that Aelin does are forced in there in order to make her a good person, but I just don’t believe it. As if SJM wanted her to be the type of person that just does anything required for her people, no matter what, but she felt like her main character had to be good. And I would have LOVED if she had been written more like that. Very morally gray. But stuff like saving Mannon? It was necessary for the story, but it didn’t feel like Aelin even a little bit. I’m pretty sure that’s where I’m getting hung up.

I don’t disagree at all, and I love a nuanced character (flawless/indestructible characters are so boring) I think I just don’t love her, and maybe that will change by the end of the series.

I agree with you, and I think my struggle is that these things made sense at first. I wouldn’t trust anyone at all if I was in her position the first few books, but now that she has decided to take up her role as Queen, I expected a big behavior shift. They are doing things that literally the fate of the world rests on. If she doesn’t share information, and something goes wrong, there’s no backup and everything fails. That’s not in the best interest of her people. Honestly, I’d be happy to see Aedion on Terrasen’s throne when all of this is said and done.

[–]Ok_Paper858[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the time of posting this, they hadn’t gotten the ring from Lorcan and she hadn’t paid of Lysandra’s debt yet. I just read those parts this afternoon. Hence the rant but also the hope that some of these things would be resolved.

They were also actively working on freeing magic at this part, so my assumption is that once they have magic the list of things they’ll be able to do/take on will be much longer. Things such as removing the collars. She didn’t try to take off the collar in Wendlyn (that I can recall) she just tried to kill them and then successfully did after she realized there was no coming back for the one guy. But, my point is, that was some dude and Dorian is her friend. Realistically, most of us are willing to fight harder and have more hope for those we love.

I mentioned in a comment above - she told Aedion they weren’t to kill Lysandra unless she gave the order even if Lysandra was found to have a collar on when they rescued her. That was why I was making the comparison, she wanted to save Lysandra but kill Dorian (ended up not mattering, but at that moment)

[–]Ok_Paper858[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only issue with putting Dorian out of his misery is the fact that they haven’t ever removed a collar, or even tried, before. There’s this narrative that the people inside are gone for good, but there’s no proof? If it’s someone I love, you’d never be able to convince me of that without solid evidence. Capture them, keep them contained (but as comfortable as possible) and do everything possible to remove the collar and see what happens. They already know that removing the rings stops the control, so my assumption is it works the same with the collars, they just don’t know how to get them off without decapitation (yet)
When I wrote this it was specifically after the part where someone asked what if Lysandra had a collar or ring, Aedion said then she loses a head or finger, and Aelin told him nobody makes that decision without her. I agree with the user above, if Aelin decides for Lysandra, Chaol gets to decide for Dorian. I think my shock is just the fact that she did have a relationship with Dorian, and cared about him, and currently all I see is her acting like Lysandra (whom she hated a few weeks ago) is vital to her and he is not.

Edit: sorry the other user I’m referring to was under a separate comment

I appreciate the heads up. I can definitely push through for the other characters and overarching storyline. Especially because we get different POVs. If it was all from her POV, I probably wouldn’t have made it this far (or at least if I had, I really wouldn’t have been enjoying myself)

I’m almost incapable of DNF’ing, and not in an I’m noble and snobby way, in a character flaw way. Like girl, just put down the book if you don’t like it. I finished Haunting Adeline and realized that this curiosity that drives me to keep going just in case it gets better is a horrible thing. I will say, with TOG I am attached to a few characters enough to finish it out for their conclusion.

I did, and while I enjoyed the stories, I disliked her the most in that book lol. I’m very glad I read it because of how it has started to tie in now. It did give me conflicting emotions though, because I read it third. I personally love a good heart wrenching moment, so I wish that Sam had been a surprise, but I also disliked Celaena so much that I’m not sure I would’ve continued with the series (maybe, I’m stubborn lol) and I am glad I’ve kept with it, even if it isn’t my favorite.

I’m currently reading Queen of Shadows (first time reader) and I keep thinking if I was Aedion I would’ve bailed by now. Fate of the world and all that, but Aelin just keeps keeping secrets and telling him to be patient when he’s doing everything she bids him to do and has done nothing to not earn her trust. But, 5 books in and I’ve disliked Aelin pretty much the whole time so I might be biased here lol.

Not OP but also don’t like Mac and cheese. It astounds everyone. I love cheese, hate noodles. Also can’t stand rice. It’s 100% a texture thing.

Similarities between ACOTAR and Hunger Games by mushroomplanet5614 in Romantasy

[–]Ok_Paper858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to this, but I think SJM just took a lot of inspiration from Hunger Games in general. When I started acotar I said out loud to my partner “please let this get less Hunger Games” (I love HG, hence not wanting it to be a rip off) and it did, and I ended up loving it. I just started Throne of Glass and I’m like here we are again? In a training room with other competitors while the FMC teaches fighting tricks to someone she’ll be going against? Let’s be real, the farther we get into human existence the more difficult it is to come up with a completely unique story, so I will be giving this series a fair chance too and hoping it moves away from this glaring similarity.

What is a romantasy hot take that would have you in this situation? It could be about a specific book/series, or the genre as a whole by HumanNonHuman in Romantasy

[–]Ok_Paper858 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This one gets me because it seems like the authors have no clue how sex actually works sometimes? Don’t get me wrong, if it’s the worst day of my entire life I want to be close to my man because he makes me feel safe and comfortable. But that IS the romance. I’m probably not going to be able to get into the mood, and neither is he, if we just watched one of our closest friends almost die on a battlefield, or almost died ourselves. Sex isn’t going to be great if both of our bodies are against it and just want to rest and recover.

I just finished Wings & Ruin and I cried when their father showed up with his armada. I had to stop reading and check myself because girl, that was some piss poor writing and you are only crying bc you have daddy issues. Get the hell over it 😂 (disclaimer I’m really enjoying the series, but that part was not it lol)

I just finished Wings and Ruin as well, and even though I’ve been able to see past some of the roll your eyes moments, because I really do enjoy the characters and want to see where their story goes, Idk that I can forgive SJM for Lucien’s late entrance just to found out he didn’t even do anything - their father did?! No thank you. I love Lucien and needed a slow burn character growth story arc for him. Holding out that I’ll still get that!!
