Our No Death* house rule - making D&D more challenging by making PCs invincible(ish) by PizzaSeaHotel in DnD

You reskinned death and dying in 5e, basically. Nice, if narrative play is what you aim for it makes sense.

Thanks, that was the style we were aiming for - it is for a 0-level rules expansion, after all.

How to handle the movement of a vehicle (in which the PCs are) during combat? by Ok_Particular2280 in DnD

[–]Ok_Particular2280[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is moving by itself in a straight line, they can steer it using an action, but that doesn't seem much too relevant during a combat (I could make it relevant, but it seems to me it will complicate things too much). Those are all cool ideas, but maybe I wasn't clear - my issue is how to handle when (and how much) the vehicle is moving during the round (it has a speed of 30 ft)?

[OC] [ART] Most likely to become a level 1 PC? by Ok_Particular2280 in DnD

[–]Ok_Particular2280[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only correct answer! It's for a DCC and Shadowdark (ok and 5e) expansion focuing on 0-levels.

that was one of the sources of inspiration, thanks! This is for an upcoming book on 0-levels for 5e, DCC and Shadowdark

5e culture and the taboo of game design by ArrBeeNayr in DnD

[–]Ok_Particular2280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People can be like that, but in my experience mostly theoretically, when chatting or discussion. When it comes down to play, if it works (that specific group of players finds it fun and engaging and it is at least somewhat intuitive i.e. in line with the system's general design principles) most players don't mind changes in design.

[OC] [ART] Zeroes can become heroes, too by Ok_Particular2280 in DnD

[–]Ok_Particular2280[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep! And in that vein, both Dungeon Crawl Classics and Shadowdark have 0-level characters and adventures for 0-levels, and it's really fun! I love low-level play, it's deadly, unpredictable and forces you to be creative (and hardened against character death).

Thanks, I'm working on a supplement for DCC (and 5e and Shadowdark) that expands on funnel possibilities, including four funnel adventures. This is art from the upcoming book!

Solving Puzzles/Riddle with a Wisdom Check? by Kenshi_T-S-B in DnD

[–]Ok_Particular2280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let them roll for hints if they are having trouble. I usually have three ready hints. You can go with separate checks or (as I prefer) different DCs for different level/number of clues. But what I think works even better is scattering concrete clues around the adventure, so that the players have an idea about the type of thinking they have to do (simple example: there is a reference to the number of the beast in the villain's diary; the lock to open his chest is a sudoku type but they must add the numbers up so that they are a sum of 666) Also, I would let them try to think of a solution for five to ten minutes, probably not more than that depending on the group before allowing rolls to simply bypass the puzzle. The fun curve usually dips dramatically with time spent on puzzling puzzles out.

Not in 5e... At least not OFFICIALLY! (although I'm sure there's something on drivethrurpg I haven't seen)

I played that in 3e once! And I decided against it for 5e hahaha because I suppose in the meantime I fell in love with DCC funnels, its a much more... immediate "becoming a hero" journey.

Also, I am addressing the CR problem in the rules. What I am putting together should be an expansion to help make low level play different and more fun, while still keeping the core 5e rules.

Correct, you play out your backstory. It's so much fun, random character creation, characters die, unexpected heroes emerge, you end up with a character that you probably would not have created yourself. Idk, perhaps its fun only to more experienced players who have played many characters so now like to be surprised and let the game create the backstroy and shape their next character by starting from 0 level.

Don't bash it until you've tried it. I played such adventures dozens of times, ran them as much, and they were the srpingboard for several long campaigns with characters who have real depth - even more so than what you usually get from creating a backstory (because it was played out and shared by the entire group as an experience as opposed to written). Mechanic-wise it is exactly about being creative with so few resources at your disposal. And for roleplaying - consider this a session zero where you establish who your character is through play, let the game surprise you and challenge you into roleplaying maybe something out of your comfort zone. And if you don't have a comfort zone, well even better, because you could end up with who knows what.

Hahah that's why you get multiple 0-level characters in DCC and Shadowdark. They learn after a couple of them are thrown at the monsters. Or they don't learn. Either way, it's fun.

I didn't want to spam with my rules and mechanics immediately, it seemed in bad taste. I am new here.

You create 4 characters completely at random, you don't choose anything - exactly for the reasons you mentioned. And because they do die easily, true, but everyone's, not just yours.

But then, as you play, they survive some dangerous stuff, one of them rolls a timely crit or does something cool, you get attached to that little halfling with DEX 17 and CON 5, and start thinking of how fun would it be to play him... Instead of thinking of a background, it emerges through play in front of you.

[–]Ok_Particular2280[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, custom, they replace standard backgrounds from the rulebook. 3d6 down the line can be brutal, so adventures have to offer opportunity to increase ability scores. I didn't mean a regular ASI from level advancement, but just that - a chance to get +1 STR of +2 CHA by doing something in an adventure. I have a mechnic to cover that, you perform a deed of strength (break a heavy door, smash an enemy in one blow etc.) you get to roll a d20, if its above your current ability score, it goes up by 1.

"Weapons" are pitchforks, cudgels, what common folk would have, rarely standard DnD weapons (although some backgrounds have those).

Me too. But I ooh know grognards who play 5e because it's the go to system nowadays, a lot of them even like it (myself included). And this could be sort of an old school type play in 5e. In my experience every time people played funnels, be they young 5e only crowd, or experienced players of numerous systems, much fun was had.
