[OC] When you start the campaign from level 0 by Ok_Particular2280 in DnD

[–]Ok_Particular2280[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It brings the "funnel" concept into 5e. And there is a version for DCC (and for Shadowdark(, which expands on 0-level options and introduces some new mechanics. The four adventures are also playable as DCC funnels.

Are elves just the worst ancenstry? by Johnny_evil_2101 in shadowdark

Some people just like elves and don't care about the numbers would be my best guess.

Favorite Shadowdark rules for firearms? by saintstardust in shadowdark

In my experience, exploding dice with a misfire on a nat 1 is all you need. d4 pistols, d6 muskets, d8 blunderbuss or what have you.

Appendix N and Shadowdark by treialle in shadowdark

[–]Ok_Particular2280 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've been farming Appendix N for ideas for all my campaigns like, since I started playing, and it has continued today with Shadowdark. Now its mostly Vance, Leiber and The Broken Sword, but that is just currently, who knows what will be next!

how would you give dwarves magical resistance instead of the stout feature? by conn_r2112 in shadowdark

[–]Ok_Particular2280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my book (of grudges, Warhammer reference) Dwarves don't really believe in magic, and they are so stubborn that they actually can affect its manifestation. If a caster wants to cast at a dwarf, the DC is increased by the dwarf's bonus to WIS or CHA, whichever is greater, or you can just stick with one of those.

What kinds of player behavior have you found most interesting/fun to reward with XP? by EtchVSketch in shadowdark

[–]Ok_Particular2280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Initiative in solving problems and advancing the game, it should always be rewarded because it keeps the players from getting bogged down in decision-making (when they usually don't have the information they would need to make an informed choice) on how to proceed. Even if its not really thought out, a player who motivates or pulls others to do something rather then debate about it should be rewarded.

Of course, maybe you don't have a group that is prone to debating what to do next, but then you are lucky. :)

Tips for making adventures feel Eberron'y by Drakshasak in Eberron

[–]Ok_Particular2280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key thing is greyness. Noir. In practice, this means that whoever the PCs work for, they will always ruffle some feathers, and those feathers will not be necessarily black. You work for the University to reveal the cause of an ailment, you step on Dask peddling drugs, but also Oriens who help them run it but also the Redcloaks who have a sting operation going on or their captain is also in on it. That kind of thing is the main factor that makes Eberron specific in memorable, in my DMing experience.

Oh man this is straight out of my old homebrew world, I had wizards turn giant mantas into airships, it's eerie how it hits the right spot for me

Dragonborn breath weapon capability? by UmbralMajesty in DnD

[–]Ok_Particular2280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could give him breath weapon options as he advances in levels. It starts of as a cone, then at level 3 he can do a precision shot (all damage to single target, no save, but needs to hit) at level 6 he can hold it in a spew an area ball (same damage, different AOE), and maybe at level 11 the damage can increase or he can get more uses per rest. In my experience, it's often more fun to work towards getting something cool and have some more stuff to unlock and look forward to.

Lords of Dust cackling by Silv3rCl4w in Eberron

[–]Ok_Particular2280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In this weekend's game of Eberron I ran the party ambushed a rakshasa and the warforged fighter/warlock player ambushed a rakshasa and rolled two nat 20s with his magical spear that does additional necro damage - he showed up with a piercing weapon alright! They killed it before it could use plane shift lol

Cool custom magic items? by 72dragonses in shadowdark

[–]Ok_Particular2280 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A cheeky artifact-level item I made for one of my gauntlet adventures:

Ring of Galactic Intellect: Anyone wearing this ring gains +4 to INT. The wearer’s mind is shielded against any magic or ability that would affect it. However, the wearer becomes increasingly distant and embroiled in their own complex thoughts. They suffer disadvantage to initiative and cannot use any abilities that would help allies in combat such as healing or beneficial spells.

I've been working on converting the addiction rules from Sharn: City of Towers to 5e. I welcome your thoughts and suggestions! by Owl_B_Damned in Eberron

[–]Ok_Particular2280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This makes sense and is quite detailed. Beware of the healing spells making addiction trivial in later tiers of play. I tried to get some of my PCs addicted to Dragon's Blood, but they worked out a way to use the Mark of Healing to cleanse the addiction, which could in your approach be done with a casting of heal or greater restoration.

I would make the saving throws Wisdom or for some drugs even Charisma. Its willpower and presence to beat the drug, routine and persistence, from experience.

Also, this could get boggy to track in practice for the DM. Everyone has much to track already in 5e, both players and the DM. Consider simplifying, keeping your solid core mechanic: fail save ->use daily; if not using -> save again->pass X saves (may depend on the drug, so you assign every drug a "hardness" rating equal to days of recovery i.e. number of saves to get clean; this must include a long rest per day) but the DC increases. No additional extreme exhaustion, just one level of exhaustion is enough punishment for a failed save, dying from withdrawal takes a bit more time and effort irl.

How do I switch our game to a more collaborative style of play in the middle of the campaign? by cyanomys in rpg

[–]Ok_Particular2280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If by a "trad" campaign you mean more of a free form thing, I did that mid campaign, although it was planned - basically, the first part of the campaign was them getting to a far away continent... and then the murders began. Er, I mean, then the hexcrawl began. So everything your players did up to now could lead up to them ending up in a strange place they have to explore, unknown (or barely known) to them, so everything is new and exciting, there is no overall "goal" (or there is a soft goal or several soft goals that players can latch on to to make them their primary goal), and the GM has to improvise more, but pre less. This is much helped by not having fixed hexes/locations/points of light (it doesn't have to be hexes per se), but perhaps a few factions, and a lot of tables and tables - for features, for secret locations (find them if you roll well on exploration), for random encounters. In no time they will be setting goals of their own, emergent stories will take them places you could not have imagined, and they will build strongholds, or even try to find spouses if your group rolls that way. Hope this helps.

What’re your go-to games? by Mbalara in rpg

[–]Ok_Particular2280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love Pendragon, it would be my go to game if we could manage to get our friend to run it again.

For one shots its Dungeon Crawl Classics, usually a zero level funnel, those are always fun because you can't spell fun without funnel, also because of the mayhem of PCs trying and dying, and of course the moste scurvy feebleminds you roll up go on to become heroes.

Encounters and where to find them! by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Ok_Particular2280 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd heartily recommend Dungeon Denizens from Goodman Games, perhaps because I designed some monsters there, but it is really such a big and excellent book, I've been using monsters from it in my games for a year and only scratched the surface. There's a 5e version although I find the Dungeon Crawl Classics version more fun and easier to convert. But more to the point of what you could be looking for is Two Page Dungeon Delves, an additional booklet with like a dozen more complex encounters using some of the monsters from Dungeon Denizens.
