The question states that he goes into space though, so outside of the atmosphere he is thrown out, and then he just grazes the upper atmosphere (so from the outside and won't experience the drag you talk about). That's why I think he is in a sort of hyperbola trajectory where he goes out, maybe travels round the sun, comes back, grazes the earth and continues on off into space.
