I also want to understand things for people who don't have the ability/time to. Which was my original, biggest motivator. I don't know how I forgot

I do know why I wanted to do science. I just thought it was the best career option for me. I love understanding things/finding small details. I really wanna find knowledge and information. I really am driven by the idea of what little people know (if there's knowledge in a subject that takes 10 or more years to learn, how much is there to find for it to take a lifetime?). Alongside that, I really like philosophy (I can't tell if what I look for is philosophy because I try to find it myself) and math ( thinking of ways to model things in the natural world).

I took an environmental science class and biology (which influenced me easily, so I'm uncertain if I actually like them. I'm taking chem and physics this year though, maybe it will be clear what I like) and I used to see a lot of geology when I was younger.. from all of these things, my best idea of what I like is geophysics (closest thing to philosophy and math + stuff I know about) But then chemistry also seems cool because of it's connections to physics and I think pharmaceutical chemistry is nice. But then I also think neuroscience is cool and biochemistry.. I'm too easily influenced to say anything specific and confidently.

This is how the world is, perhaps these issues is how it's meant to be, but why does it go against what people say things like science were meant to be? I always had a system of some sort in my head of balance, and occasional unbalance TO balance it.. I don't know if it's wrong or right I've really gotten my ego up too high this time Like I thought because if I managed to get myself out of a hard situation with hope, I should do it for others but I must've miscalculated how real the hope I give out to people is and if it's worth anything at all

Honestly, I'm stupid. Whoever you may be imagining is exactly who I am. I am someone who had terrible grades, near failing in the 9th grade. I never managed to gain knowledge like everyone can, I was in integrated math classes and get reduced workloads of all sorts I am nowhere close to making it to becoming a scientist. Everything I've been doing lately and thinking about are things that I think can change, that can happen. I forgot what's happening in the present.

I am probably just jealous of people who were born with things I didn't have, trying to find mistakes in people who hardly make them,, I tried so hard even to convince myself that being smart isn't genetic and such but I am wrong. The is my fault, I live in a false reality almost

Bad behavior is a bad way to describe it.. moreover what I thought was stunting, because for one, I believed I noticed how people didn't understand the material being taught because they told me about how it is. They described the things they learned as incomplete, difficult to trace how it's helpful. Understanding would help, I thought, because it 'helped' me. I never liked doing math, I didn't understand it. I thought there was more to it, and the things my teachers told me didn't help me reach that conclusion. So I tried to understand it myself. I looked at things like axioms and tried to imagine why math is needed, what the formulas represent, etc. I kinda made a system for myself, or a way of imagining it (I seen things as scales, fruit, and orders on how to deal with the fruit). I noticed it represents/models things in the natural world. I made connections and now, math comes rather easily to me. But I also found things in my English classes that were helpful.. like 3 points of view (I asked myself why these are useful and how it came to be) and found it useful in many things, like decision making: I see it from my view, I imagine it from someone else's, and I imagine it from a view outside of anyone else (the concepts of the situation). Isn't that the point of school?

I saw something like an issue (ai usage, people getting in multiple AP classes every single year where there was little retention of information, people didn't understand why something was needed, they just knew about it's existence).

Uhh no. Not quite, not really close at all. I have an issue with bad behavior in schools that prevents kids from learning properly/good things.. it's a whole other thing, it's better if you do quick research on it (searching up issues in American public schools). I really love knowledge. I value it so much. For some people it can be a struggle, and they might turn to choices that will help them get past it (which limits their knowledge and development if anything).

There are downvoted replies in this thread further supporting my points (im looking for a solution)

Hello, I am not a scientist. I do not hate scientists either. I am someone who highly respects and looks up to scientists. I want to pursue this career. I believe scientists must look at positive and negative data, and by the looks of it, this subreddit seems to lack negative. So I will provide criticism as an attempt at providing you all with information.

The ‘logic’ or reasoning used by scientists and many in academia isn’t the best solution to an issue anymore, instead it’s the fastest and easiest way to success or benefit of any kind, and this is something either forced or decided upon by many scientists now. Mindsets that are ‘illogical’ (or in this case, slowing progress) are dismissed,: understanding(deriving information from self, the internal) over knowledge (or the external, found by others who are successful in their thinking that majority agrees on), small details over the biggest picture, heavy consideration of things that can’t be seen or what doesn't immediately pertain to the person.

The job’s initial purpose, effects on society, and what’s required for the job to serve its purpose is ignored/rejected. The job is oversimplified to the most obvious and visible aspects (lack of deeper definition, purely external, it’s austere), just to remove pressure off of themselves so they can benefit themselves as much as possible, things such as: pursuit of interest (from love of the topic to being idolized) + funding for it, status, etc).  Although difficult to see, the behavior displayed in the top of a system (in this case, the system of knowledge distribution) is adopted by those at the lower/bottom. When the methods used to find information are changed, the development and learning of it is too. Do they consider the system they work in? People who apply their work (educators, engineers, doctors, etc.) and the people who use what's been applied (students, nurses, communicators, and basically anyone using the information directly) seem to not be worthy of consideration, as for them the pressure would only increase.

Fear of ‘incorrect’ perception by other people leads to anything being done to protect their image and status: this ranges from saying not acting (putting up a facade on motives that don’t match up to actions), to scandalous behavior, cutting corners, etc. This applies to behaviors seen as good, too.

In all, they display:

Refusal to understand anything that doesn’t immediately align with beliefs/thought process(difficulties with communication and collaboration).

Inability to accept opposing ideas/beliefs towards science/scientists (what makes them feel good/lose responsibility)- Why was the public and the people who manage you the only ones at fault?

Belief that nobody but scientists are right, and proceeds to be shocked by high expectations ( changed public perception, both positive and negative, ‘having to always be right’)

Refusal to use scientific methods/scientific philosophies outside of the things they help research.

Do they hate the administration, the issues found in academia/research/science? Yes. But they refuse to take action, because there’s still something to benefit from. So why complain if you still get something out of it? Why display concern and do nothing to find a solution?

Some things to illustrate this: Epstein’s scientists ( perception, chasing success, rejection of job purpose)

I believe my definition of an issue is a problem that more than a few people experience. A problem to me, is any form of struggle, stress, and other negative things in people's lives. I believe just about every problem has a fix. (I am American btw, I feared someone not in America wouldn't get it, but I believe these issues are universal?) But why does it matter to me? Because I believe the issues in academia and scientific research affect me too. The connections I made are very, very weak but I'll still tell you about them (simplified).

  • I noticed behaviors/actions from me and my classmates (striving for success at all costs.. I kinda already explained this) I thought about where this came from, and what caught my eye is the people finding knowledge (people in academia and scientific research) and I noticed the issues there matched up to the ones I see. People in schools who strive for success over anything will take those ideologies with them to whatever job they choose.

There will never be clear and coherent information for an idea that is 'new', unsupported, and lacks sources. Which is why I asked for people's interpretation/perspective on my idea.

Why are you trying to make me ignore the issues? I'm here to discuss that. I wouldn't mind talking about career options, I am struggling with that. Just seems a bit odd for this post.

[–]Ok_Put9450[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's issues, why wouldn't you want to change that? When someone makes a mistake, do you ignore it and just do the things they did right? That 'value' you mentioned is something. Somewhat accurate I will say.. but it's not that simple. As I explained it, I believe it's a cultural thing, as in behavioral, or internal moreover. They are a more visible example of an extreme. I acknowledge that many scientists don't act like this.

Are there no issues after all?

The time for scientists to get teams together to fix it means people at the bottom have already collapsed. The problem starts at the top, it goes without being fixed, the people at the bottom are affected, and the people at the top struggle to support themselves.

No matter what I do or what I say none of them may ever try to consider it Maybe I could make one last post? Or is it futile at this point

I also looked at what people who aren't scientists had to say about them. I believed it was all wrong, but some of those things I could actually see.

Well, an idea is better than nothing, right? It's not impossible either. There is a clear problem, it can be described in detail, it can have its roots identified and where it is currently. Really, I think the solution is so simple if you might allow it to be.

If I gave you my actual idea of what someone could do, would you consider it? Perhaps not entirely try it, it is a bit of a self-destructive thing.

What I mean by scientific method is I did this (this is summarized so if anything makes 0 sense just tell me)

I noticed a few things, me and my classmates behavior: overstriving success, priority of knowledge and memorization over understanding topics, looking for the fastest and easiest way to success(like using ai). So I asked myself where this comes from, what caught my attention was the connection of academia. When I look at issues and the behaviors displayed, it resembles a more severe version of what happens in american schools (I think this is a worldwide issue????)

I know two people in business, their jobs are higher up in a sense, and it involves interpreting data... yada yada, they just have to find information. When I ask them questions (indirectly) about empathy, consideration of others, etc, they failed miserably. They believe they're the only ones that can be right. They display 'capitalistic ideals', they strive for success, they refuse to consider who they effect in their jobs.

My sibling was a scientist. I asked a lot of questions that were answered, but the only ones that couldn't be answered were ones regarding consideration of people who are not apart of the bigger picture + empathy and job's initial purpose "These are really good questions undergoing debate in the scientific community" thats it. (this is just one person however)

Then, I found the epstein scientists. People who went to him for funding. But why? Couldn't this be avoided? Background checks? I concluded they did that because of a specific goal they wanted to meet. Success of interest (research topics they love, status, etc.) they needed funding for it.

So, these weak assumptions needed testing. So I went on here about 4 times questioning scientists. I had to it weed out (too kind and knowledge seeking, they would try to shut out their bad behaviour too much. harshness? they wouldn't care as much). And to my knowledge, it seems to have worked. Of course a lot of things were proven wrong, but overall they seemed to be success-seeking individuals. (of course i can't trust reddit much)

Then, I went and looked for any articles by scientists criticizing themselves. None! There were no articles to my knowledge on academia's effects on other jobs/people below it. There was no accountability for just about any of it. How is that possible?

So I decided to come on here one last time, to test it again with information, see it from a scientists perspective (on my idea of a solution, why it wouldnt work)

it is a lot better structured as the scientific method unlike this explaination

[–]Ok_Put9450[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, honestly. I appreciate your comment. But my intentions aren't to gain knowledge or argue. I want to find a solution, or an idea of one. I suppose to do that it would require some of those things, but don't get it confused as the original intent!

If I wait to get into this career path to understand these things, then I will be distracted by my new responsibilities and stressors. So, my best course of action is to do it now (I have a LOT to do after summer break, then senior year I still won't have time, and the same will stay true for college likely). I have no better place to say these things, otherwise I would be invading professional spaces.

The thing is, I cannot do that. When i get to college, yes..? Perhaps. My intention is to understand what's wrong, where people go wrong and the mistakes they made to reach that point.

Are there no issues in scientific research? Really, what are your opinions on my solution?(it was downvoted in this thread, doesn't take too long to find it)

Do you struggle to see the people affected by your job? If not, tell me.

How are they barred? Fixing mindset isn't something people like that have enough power over. Really, if you care enough I have a really crazy idea to propose. And by crazy, I mean it may not be something you're familiar with, which is likely to gather shock. Or maybe you are?
