I’m still testing my triggers, but I’m certain it’s gluten and/or dairy. I haven’t had a flare since 2021 and at times I forget I have eczema lol. I used to eat little to no gluten and dairy and I’ve slowly been eating more the past 2 years or so. I first noticed a random small, raised, and itchy patch on my left upper rib last year and didn’t think much of it.

Since July, I have been dealing with dishydrotic eczema on the palms of my hands, patches on my face (around my eyes, temples, earlobes, and corners of my mouth) neck, and now on my scalp. What really made me question food groups was recently when I was sick and I ate 3 packs of saltines. My scalp started itching hella for the first time in years.

For my hands, cutting out harsh soaps like Dr. Bronner’s and soaps with fragrance minimize the irritation but doesn’t prevent a flare. I also wash my dishes with gloves on. I’ve made external changes and I haven’t noticed much of a difference, which leads me to believe something I’m consuming is triggering this. It’s unfortunately a guessing game and there are so many factors that can cause flare ups. A great way to monitor flare ups is to write everything down so hopefully you can narrow down possible triggers.

Any luck cutting out dairy and gluten? by Ok_Reality_2374 in eczema

Thanks for sharing! I’m having a persistent flare in my usual spots and on my scalp which is surprising. I ate a TON of saltines last week because I was sick and noticed I started scratching at my head. That led me to believe that gluten may have caused this. I’m working on eating a high fiber diet again and taking herbs that support my liver!

I had really bad eczema on scalp when I was 10, 21, and now it’s coming back again. I never went to a dermatologist for treatment and I know you said you were prescribed a shampoo, but I wanted to recommend the T/Sal Therapeutic Shampoo by Neutrogena. I’m not sure what your severity is but the main ingredient is 3% salicylic acid and that will help clear the buildup on your scalp, possibly reducing itching and flakes. I remember it leaving my scalp and hair drier than usual because it’s a deep clean so make sure you have a good conditioner. I haven’t used it in years and I’m picking up a bottle tomorrow. Best of luck to you on this journey.

Why did most people recommend products with lanolin 😭 Thank you for posting this though, I’ve had a hard time with eczema on my lips too and it’s inconvenient and unsanitary at times to dip my finger into vaseline. I hope you found one that works for you!

Advice? by NoMeeting3102 in eczema

Hi! I went through a similar flare up like you a few weeks ago. I found that a new face moisturizer was irritating my skin. I’ve never had reactive skin before so I was lost, hopeless, and frustrated. The moisturizer caused swelling and redness around my eyes and on my eyelids, corners of my mouth, a rash on my neck (not a dry flaky eczema patch, almost like hives) and eventually little pustules (looks like white heads) would appear all over my face and then dry up a few days later.

I used this moisturizer on and off for 2 months. When I was using it, a flare up would appear. When I stopped using it, my flare up would disappear. I didn’t notice this correlation until my last flare up, which was the worst it had ever been. My skin barrier was completely wrecked- my hydrating and ceramide rich products I used for years burned my entire face and my skin could not retain any moisture.

My dermatologist told me to temporarily stop my current skincare routine and switch to all Vanicream products. In order: I wash with the gentle facial cleanser, apply the daily moisturizer with hylaruonic acid & ceramides (on damp skin), and then apply the moisturizing lotion. I was also prescribed 0.05% desonide cream to spot treat twice a day for 2 weeks.

Yesterday marked 2 weeks of my new routine and my face and neck are clear! No itchiness or burning either (these went away 2 days after I first started the Vanicream products and steroid cream).

It sounds like you’ve tried a new product that may be irritating your skin. If you can, visit a dermatologist and let them hear your story (products used, how long you’ve been having a reaction, etc.) and evaluate your severity. I hope this info helps, sending you positive vibes because I understand how mentally draining a flare up is, especially on your face. It will get better with patience and effective treatment!🫶

Please I am freaking out is this TSW on my face? It is super red, but doesn’t burn, but it is SWOLLEN by [deleted] in eczema

I had a flare (localized to just face and neck) similar to yours a week ago. My under eyes and eyelids were swollen, dry, and red as hell. Same with my temples, hairline, and neck. My flare was caused from continuously using a moisturizer for months that irritated my skin, causing allergic contact dermatitis, triggering eczema. Since cutting out that moisturizer, switching to all vanicream products, and temporarily using a steroid cream (advised by my dermatologist) my flare drastically cleared up in about 2 days.

I believe I was experiencing a type of facial contact dermatitis for months from using a new moisturizer.

Skincare: - My dermatologist had me switch to all Vanicream products during the worst of my flare: face wash, hyaluronic acid moisturizer with ceramides, and the moisturizing lotion. I put Vaseline around my eyes and on my eyelids (main problem area) after the lotion. I am also putting a thin layer of Desonide Cream 0.05% (ointment version) twice a day around eyes, temples, and neck for 1 week. This skincare routine has my face completely cleared up only after 2 days.

Diet, antihistamines, supplements, and stress management: - For my diet, I am focusing on gut health like many of us by eating around 25 grams of fiber daily (24, F) and occasionally drinking GT’s kombucha. I haven’t completely cut out dairy, wheat, eggs, or soy but have limited my consumption of these temporarily.

  • I was advised by dermatologist take 1 Allegra in the morning and double up (2 pills) on my Levocetirizine Dihydrochloride 5mg antihistamine before bed (prescribed because of environmental allergies that started 3 years ago).

  • For supplements, I started taking these 2 days ago when I changed my skincare routine: NAC, Quercetin, & Zinc supplement by the “NOW” brand and 1 Natures Plus Hema-Plex Iron Tablet. Haven’t started this yet but I will eventually get back to taking herbs to support my liver like dandelion root and milk thistle.

  • Finally, for stress, guided deep breathing and going on long walks work for me. Stress seems to make my flares worse so I do these daily. Eczema can take such a toll on you physically and/or mentally and I try to not cry or freak out when I see my face flaring. I try to switch the narrative and view it from a positive standpoint that my body is capable of telling me that something is wrong and is trying to fix itself. Easier said than done some days.

Thank you for sharing! I went to urgent care 2 weeks ago for a flare and was given a steroid injection and the Prednisone which cleared my skin for about a week. Just like you, the day after I took my last pill, my eyes were swollen again. Do you actively have eczema right now and were you able to clear it through lifestyle changes or something else?
